29th April Met up with my Flower Club friends for a photo opportunity amongst the flowers in the hotel lobby. They went on their way and Benita, David & I set off to visit the area by the Ritz Cafe where we like to sit and people watch outside the Theatre close to the municipal gardens. The town was bustling, no cruise ship in port today but obviously still plenty of visitors all here for the Flower Festival. Little kiosks were dotted all along the Avenue, selling flowers, local delicacies, drinks and souvenirs, the paper flower decorations overhead blowing in the warm breeze. Suddenly the sound of folk singers could be heard and with their colourful costumes it was both a beautiful sound and a colourful sight as they paraded through the crowds. The flowers were ... read more

28th April Another hot day in Madeira, not that we are complaining ! Benita & I took a walk to the local main farmers market, I have been down ‘Door Street’ as I call it many times but a first for Benita. There were a few newly painted doors so I had to capture them. This historic district known as “Old Town”, has over the past few years gone through a process of revitalization, in order to turn it into a more significant and attractive cultural centre and a permanent art gallery with decorative paintings on about 200 doors along Rua de Santa Maria. It didn’t take long to arrive at the market which was bustling. Two flower sellers outside and even more inside as well as exotic fruits of all shapes, sizes & colours. Locals ... read more

27th April We tend not to do full day excursions anymore but as this is Benita’s first visit to Madeira it was worth it to show her a different part of the Island. Just 20 passengers on the small bus which was just as well as the twists & turns of the mountain roads we took would have been a nightmare in a larger vehicle. Noo Noo was our driver, a very pleasant guide and a very careful driver. Our journey today took us East passing the airport where we had arrived only a few days ago, it feels like we’ve been here for ages & still 11 days to go. The Portuguese navigators discovered the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo in 1419. It is said that these navigators first discovered the island of Porto ... read more

Decided today would be a chill day around the pool area, although Benita did take a lovely long walk along the pretty promenade and through part of the town she saw yesterday. (1.5 hrs walking a bit too much for me & definitely Mr.M). Saving our energy for tomorrow’s trip out of Funchal. I was looking forward to a flower arranging event at the hotel, I think I got myself too excited because it wasn’t hands on but watching the hotel florist arrange a huge display in the dining room which consisted of hard ruscus, eucalyptus,Star of Bethlehem and lots and lots of spray chrysanthemum. What looked more interesting was a display being created in the hotel lobby as part of the celebration for the flower festival. Only three people watching in the dining room but ... read more

After a good nights sleep we were up in good time to enjoy the wonderful choice for breakfast. Following breakfast we met with Pedro our Jet2 helper during our stay here, usually I would not attend the welcome meeting as we have been to Madeira several times but it was good for Benita to learn from a local all about the island without it being a hard sell. A leisurely morning in the beautiful sunshine was the recipe for the day, went up onto the sun roof area but with little shade and no breeze it was a bit too hot. A snack from the local bakery for lunch and then whilst David was napping Benita & I went for a short walk along the promenade passed all the little food & drink vehicles, the statues ... read more

It’s been a while! We were due to visit Madeira back in 2020 to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary, 3 years on following covid lockdown we’ve finally managed to return for the wonderful Flower Festival Season with the added bonus of bringing my dear sister Benita for her first ever visit to this beautiful island. An early start from home yesterday to Stansted for our 3.5 hour flight with Jet2. A lot of changes since we last took a flight when we arrived from Mauritius just as lockdown started. Airport was very busy but with online check-in & very helpful Jet2 staff at the bag drop is wasn’t long before we were making our way through security - A kind airport worker ushered us to follow the purple line aimed at people with less mobility (David’s ... read more

March 26 – Madeira It’s 7:30 am, the room is still dark the sun hasn’t begun to show itself. All I see is Kirsten’s smiling face, Good Morning sugar. We’re home, I look out our cabin sliding doors and it truly looks like I’m looking out our bedroom sliding doors overlooking Lake Howard. We’re in Madeira, our first stop after crossing the Atlantic. It’s an island part of an archipelago islands belonging to Portugal off the coast of Africa. We docked sometime early, Kirsten was up, dressed, ready for breakfast leaving out the door saying I’ll see you up on the Lido Deck. You better hurry, were getting off the ship on the first group. I rollout of bed and hurry getting dressed. I arrive on the Lido deck Kirsten has already has my breakfast waiting ... read more

Day 10 - Last Port of call - Funchal - Madeira We visit Madeira quite often and will be back here in April so after a leisurely breakfast we took a taxi to our usual hotel Porto Santa Maria, located close to the cable car & old town. The hope was that we could arrange our grandstand seats for the Flower Parade that takes place on 30th April but it was too early as reservations are not yet being taken. We will have time when we arrive to secure the seats but I might just email the hotel before hand. It can take a couple of hours for the parade to pass so obtaining a seat is a must! We enjoyed a frothy coffee in one of the cafe’s close to the cable car. On Saturdays ... read more

Madeira is a beautiful island because, although volcanic in origin, it has a huge amount of rainfall in the mountains which makes it very fertile for all sorts of fruits and trees. Funchal, the capital, nestles in the southwest of the island and so has the best climate. Up in the hills there is a lovely Botanical Garden, which is worth a visit. It has wonderful ferns and other tropical plants from all over the world. This island has the perfect climate to grow anything. You can get there by cable car from the town if you don't have a car or coach. There is also a lovely church, Our Lady of Monte but you do have to climb quite a few steps to get to it. This is also the place where you can get ... read more

Sunday October 16– Up early, because I just can’t help it. Made some eggs for breakfast and then headed down to the bus stop where I would meet the tour bus at 8:30. I showed up 10 minutes early and the bus driver was already there. The next pick-up was not until 9:00 and it was a 10-minute drive away, so we stopped at a café where the driver had a coffee. There were only 8 other people on the tour, which was nice, and they were all staying in the hotel/Lido zone, where I had walked a couple of days ago. We headed out shortly after 9:00 and it was a full day out. Our first stop was a fishing village not too far from Funchal called Câmara de Lobos. They were famous for whaling, ... read more
