Two things have struck me in nine years traveling to Madeira: 1) how amazing the roads are and 2) how few visitors take advantage of them. Some of the roads are quite epic, whether sweeping clifftop coastal roads or traversing the steep valley walls of the interior and, outside of the main towns, you have these roads largely to yourself. Both the quality of the roads and the scenery that surrounds them make Madeira a driving destination in its own right. Yes, Madeira for a fly-drive holiday First thing to mention are the highways or 'Auto-estrada'. Huge sums of public money have been spent making more of the island accessible, and the only way to put expressways through such difficult terrain (Madeira is essentially a mountain serrated by valleys) is bridge-tunnel-bridge-tunnel. Each and every metre of ... read more

Thursday April 28th, 2011 Atlantic Ocean East of Funchal, Madeira Latitude 32 degrees 42 minutes’ north- Longitude 16 degrees 02 minutes’ west Oh, the romance of it all. How can there be an island so fair and yet uninhabited and unclaimed until the 1400s? Sitting there about 500 miles off the coast of Africa is a lush, beautiful island that remained completely untouched until the Portuguese claimed it in 1419. It was mentioned in ancient Phoenician and Roman texts and yet no one had “claimed” it until a Portuguese sailor blown off course landed there and set the flag of the King of Portugal. No natives to subdue or abuse, just set up your colony and start from scratch. And for 600 years they have done just that. It is clean, well organized and quite nice. ... read more

It's almost over. This is the last story about this stay on Madeira, a cheerful one on carnival. Saturday evening at nine we had a (relatively) small fireworks display to announce the start of the float parade. Last year we'd seen the fireworks and the parade in the rain. This year the day was sunny and the night clear, but rather cold, only 12 degrees. Poor boys and girls, scantily clad in their flimsy veils and feathers. They were dancing away to keep themselves warm. No such luck for the people who'd bought tickets to watch from the bleachers, they must have been frozen ... read more

It has started, carnival 2011. The streets of Funchal have been redecorated (some of the festive lights were still there from end of the year festivities), and yesterday there was again humpah humpah music in the streets. Lots of children have dressed up and are dancing in the streets to entertain the people. The newspapers reported hotelowners very satisfied with their occupancy rates. But not just that, also some very good guitar music by two italian guys. And I like to share al that happiness ! You can see more carnivalesque pictures on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=60855&id=100000507281655&l=4659f5f76b Yesterday a new coffee shop opened near us. High time, we thought, because they have Illy coffee, which is still our favourite, together with Nespresso. So we went and had a coffee, which was delicious. And free, because of the opening. ... read more

Dat ... read more

We'd seen the junk Nuthin Wong still swying in the harbour of Funchal for the harbour of Funchal for the past few weeks, and wondered when he'd be leaving. Last Monday Clive was back on the pier with his folding table and several copies of his book. He told us he was waiting for a video camera to arrive. It was held up in Porto for some reason, but it should arrive the next day. Never send anything through Fedex, he warned us. The camera would serve to make films in addition to his blog and in the end make a DVD of his voyage. Anyhow, as soon as the camera had arrived, they'd leave. Originally he was to go back to Canada. But while in Madeira he'd received an email from a old friend who ... read more

Being on this island for three months, means that you have to find a rythm. You can't be on holiday all that time, quite apart from the fact that our budget doesn't stretch to 3-months' vacantioning. We both brought our mini laptops and Paul is doing his bourse thing every day, making us some nice spending money for restaurant and trips. Besides keeping him happy. Even though I'm not a fan of routine, some discipline is needed to keep me from just wandering through life and in the end doing nothing at all. That's very easy to get used to, but there's too much in this life that must be done, even if most of it is usually not pleasant. Like paying bills, filling in forms, talking to civil servants, to name a few. Or see ... read more
