We are starting to wonder if the weather gods might just be planning against us when it comes to visiting the ‘big’ attractions as we awoke this morning to steady light rain and a rather grey, sullen sky. Time first then for some administration and once breakfast was over it was time to tackle the front loader washing machine in the hope that we choose a cycle that won’t take half the day to complete. Mila obviously had her spot inside the back door where the washing machine was when it was raining. The hot water boiler was also there and it was nice and warm as well as dry. The only problem she is a big dog and Gretchen needed to share the space in getting the washing into the machine. While Gretchen is not ... read more

One of my daily thoughts for the day written by Thich Nhat Hanh says that I should smile and I was trying to do that, to breathe, yes I was breathing very deeply and finally go slowly. As far as going slowly that seemed impossible in Sintra. Wherever you were there were crowds. You could not get away from them. They hustled and bustled on the hop on , hop off buses, on the little taxis that furrowed a path through town and they crowded into every shop, café and palace. You needed to smile and to breathe in very slowly before trying to move on. On top of all that my bum was painful as the bruise spread like a wildfire in the Australian bush. It was slowly but surely turning my rear end purple. ... read more

Having caught the bus back to our starting point we joined the rather long queue for the bus to Monseratte Palace. The queue stretched along the block and past the train station. Rather than four bus stops the one had to cater for those doing the Pena Castle loop, the trip to the coast at Cabo Roca, the bus to Cascais and the one we were waiting for which was the bus for Monserraz. We checked the timetable and the arrival time came and went with no sign of our bus. Eventually it turned up and we were two of a handful going to our destination. On our way we passed the Reghleira Palace. built at the start of the 20th century and was the brainchild of its owner Monteirio and the Italian architect Manini. Full ... read more

We are up to almost the half way point of the holiday . Thoughts so far . After bad start to the weather it has improved and it was positively steaming by the time we arrived at our campsite Camping Lisboa. My sun tan is coming along nicely . Worried by the tolls we went through more of them today which could mean more arguing with the Portuguese and more talking to Germany and Tolltickets. It has spoilt the holiday so far worrying about them. We even crossed the Tagus on the bridge with Christ the Redemer looking down on us. Not a squeak did the box make. Glenn has been unwell with severe stomach ache and this has made life a bit difficult at times. The air pressure in the new suspension let itself down ... read more

This was an enjoyable day trip from Lisbon. It's very touristy but has some beautifully manicured gardens, nice walking, and good photo ops. It's low key and requires little energy. ... read more

Day three started a bit later thanks to Lisbon's SLE soccer team having won the Portuguese title. We lay in bed for literally hours as young guys screamed/chanted and blasted air horns. I got up naturally around 10 thinking it was dark and dreary, but Chris had shut the shutters so it was actually gorgeous out. We'd also missed breakfast, so we'd have to grab something at the train station before getting on the train to Sintra. Well, the train station ticket window and automated machines were a shitshow - I really hope that things return to low-key with tourists once Easter Monday is over. After waiting 30 minutes in line and missing two trains, I figured I'd have Chris see if he could get through the gate with our metro pass, since a train symbol ... read more

I woke up this morning sweating, with an awful headache. I chugged down some water and took a nice, cold shower. It was super refreshing and helped. I got ready for the day, trying to be really quiet because some people were still sleeping. What I have found out it that when I try to be really quiet, I end up being super loud. After I finished waking up everyone in the room, I made my way to breakfast. It was my first real breakfast while I have been traveling because it was included with my room price. I decided to go to Sintra today, which is about 30 minutes away from Lisbon. So I got my things and headed towards the direction I thought the train station was in. After asking for help, I found ... read more

Day-trip excursions from Lisbon are actually fairly numerous, and each of them probably warrants a day trip on a separate occasion. Since this was my first and only visit to Portugal, choose wisely I had to, and choose wisely I did, and came up with the idea of visiting the hillside palace town of Sintra, coupled with the national palace of Queluz, both of which are on the same train line out of Lisbon. Upon arrival in Sintra, there was instant evidence to suggest that this is one of Europe's best kept secrets, and a town which charms visitors with its' grand-scale buildings set in a smalltown rural setting. A cluster of restaurants and souvenir shops greets the visitor upon arrival in the town's ma... read more

SINTRA Day 14 After eating some delicious scrambled eggs/toast/cereal for breakfast I asked Guy for some advice on where to visit in Sintra. As it is only a 40minute train ride from Lisboa I had a good part of the day to wander and enjoy the sights of Sintra. I got off the train and was blown away with how beautiful the city is. It is nestled in a mountain side so all the streets and houses are at various levels. I walked towards the city’s historic centre. The main street down has numerous statues along the side of the road all in the theme of the ocean. I walked past many houses with beautiful tile work and a number of fountains. There are so many things to look at that it is hard to ... read more
