I´ve just eaten a delicious Cataplana here on the outskirts of Lisbon. So I can´t go to bed until my stomach has processed the nourishment. So I found a free Internet connection to play with. And so to blog. Once again we´ve been spoiled with brilliant sunshine and warm weather. Only 10 weeks to go to Christmas and it still feels like the middle of summer. It´s going to be hard to acclimatize back home. We found the sea fairly cool at first but it seems to have warmed up as the weather became more settled. Yesterday was the first day that I could have swam in the sea all afternoon without chilling. We had problems with the Management Services team. I had to add up lots of sums of money just to find out if ... read more

Resolvi escrever hoje...

A week of sailing extremes this week. We went from having no wind at all early in the week further north to having a Force 6 and tearing a sail! We spent a night anchored off in Sao Martinho that was terrible. The wind coming from the North and the swell coming from the west was full on rock and roll. Having so many people sea sick on board made it all so much worse. Thomas epitomised it with “the worst night of his life”. OK, so he’s a young 15 and is likely to have much worse in his years to come, but still, it was pretty awful. As no one was particularly resting we set out early to go towards the Berlingas islands. The advice is to approach these only in the most settled ... read more

Spring Trip - April 20 - May 18 This spring I decided to take a month before summer polo starts in Toronto, to travel to Europe. My plan is to depart April 30 and return May 18. The first part of the trip is a motorcycle trip through Spain and Portugal for 10 days, and then I'll figure it out from there. Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - Toronto Canada I had a bit of a shaky start. My original flight was to depart April 20, from Toronto to London, and then on to Lisbon. Due to the volcano in Iceland, my flight was cancelled on April 19. I phoned my travel agent, Lisa, and she re-booked me through Munich. I arrived at the airport, only to find that the Munich flight had been cancelled. The agent ... read more

Hey all!! We just landed in Lisbon this morning & are hanging out at our hotel in Estoril overlooking the beautiful ocean! We had a great cruise, with some hiccups, but were able to see sights we only dreamed we'd see!! Here's a quick recap. Upon boarding, we were handed a health notification stating that people had gotten sick with gastro enteritis the cruise prior to ours. Cruise staff sanitized our hands EVERYWHERE. We were getting sprayed left and right with the stuff, and there were sanitizer stands set up all over the ship & in every elevator. Even the buffet was sanitized regularly & staff was onhand to give your food to you at the buffet instead of serving ourselves. It was a pain but we got over it because we figured it'd keep us ... read more

The weather is amazing here. One minute it can be warm and sunny, the next unprepared travelers can find themselves in the middle of a torrential downpour. We wore layers today and still were occasionally caught off-guard by sudden changes. But all in all we had a lovely day exploring Estoril and Cascais. The day dawned bright and beautiful. “It looks like it's going to be sunny!” Matthew announced while I was getting ready. By the time we switched places, I looked outside and said “Um, honey? It's pouring rain outside.” What to do? We went to have breakfast - and I finally broke down and paid the hotel clerk the euro to use the internet for a half-hour to post photos on the blog - and by the time we were done the rain passed ... read more

So, out of necessity we picked our first hotel in Lisbon on the basis of in-suite laundry. NO ONE PANIC, it was still a nice hotel. After a couple weeks without laundry, it was very welcome. We spent our first night in the hotel doing a load an hour and hanging it from every possible chair, table and balcony thing we could. The next day we grabbed some breakfast and headed for Cascais, a nearby beach town. It was quite nice, although the walking was slow due to some “dodgy tummyness”. I went for a quick swim in the ocean and it was surprisingly cold. Now having travelled a lot, I am not usually given to whining about ocean temperatures. On this occasion my legs actually started to ache from the cold, it was a short ... read more

We got to Lisbon late at night and luckily got a taxi to the hostel... it turns out we were in the worst part of town where people were with knifes and stuff with gangs on each street. On the corner of our hostel was two cops making sure noone was dying.... The city itself was not what we expected, the beach was not there and the water stunk... So after 1 day we left and went to Cascais which was awesome! We were in a cabin at a tent place, the beach was nice and the weather was usually hot. The town was nice and quiet too. We saw Night at the Museum 2 in subtitles and we were the only people in the movies who got the jokes. We also saw this really cool ... read more
