Bischöflicher Barockgarten in Castelo Branco.

Da sieht man erst, was unsere Landwirtschaft gemacht hat.

Stadtmauer. Arraiolos: netter Ort. Dort werden Teppiche gestickt. Kastell und Kirche auf Berg. Evoramonte: Burg, Kirche und kleine Häuser auf Berg. Umgeben von Mauer. Estremoz: ebenfalls Stadtmauer. Billigster Kaffee der Welt.... read more

Schöne Fahrt nach Elvas Portugal. .

Friday, Day 4: Mike and I awoke early this morning in our “hunting villa in the sky“ and decided to explore a bit before breakfast. Tia Wendy was busy in the kitchen. Insisting that she didn’t need help, we were given coffee and encouraged to wander. What a cool place this is! We found a circular stairway that lead us to the uppermost floor, used as their grand party room. With windows all around, we could see a bagillion little towns tucked in the crevasses of the mountains. In the center of the room, there was another stairway leading up the the rooftop. Not wanting to overstep, literally and figuratively, we decided to ask Pedro to take us up after breakfast. By 8:30am, the crew had assembled in the breakfast room. A wonderful meal had been ... read more

October 31, 2017, to Rabacal, Casa do Turismo, 17.5 km. We had a late start this morning Breakfast wasn't served until 8 (we had already paid for it on Booking.com). Also our clothes that were washed the night before had not arrived back. A nice walk along country roads and narrow paths. The morning was cool and shady - the afternoon hot with no shade3. It should be reversed. We had an almost perfect spacing of cafes today - 5 kms. to our "second breakfast" and another 8 for our lunch stop. I got my first blister today, on the tip of my little toe. Hmmm. I'm wearing my Wright Socks with built-in liners that guarantee that you won't get blisters. Again, 3 days in a row, we are the only ones staying in the Residencial. ... read more

Saturday, October 28th, Tomar, 2nd day, Hostel 2300 Thomar, 15 kms. Two weeks ago we got on a plane for Lisbon. I have to say that so far the Portuguese Camino has been an entirely different experience than the Camino Frances last year. There are much fewer fellow pilgrims, much less support along the path (places to eat and stay), less knowledge even of the Camino by the Portuguese people. Today it began to feel more “Camino-ish.” It got hillier (downright steep at times), with more off-road hiking through forests and olive groves and along rivers. We were walking towards our half-way point, and the heat and hills were getting to me. We had 2 alternate routes to choose from ahead of us, and we took the one with the café where we could wait for ... read more

Tuesday, October 24th to Santarem, Santarem Hostel. Breakfast at Quinta da Burra was as good and nourishing as supper. Paula encouraged us to take sandwiches with us because the next facilities were 13.5 km. away. Another cool morning as we continued along the dike of the river and then through fields that farmers were preparing for fall crops. Santarem is on a hill, a 400-foot steep climb. Not normally a big problem, but after walking all day with no facilities (i.e., bathrooms) or snack bars, increasing heat and tiredness, the climb up the hill was grueling. Well, the 13.5 km walk to the next facilities turned into almost 16 as the place was closed. Yikes! Almost at the top we found a little pastry shop and had a well-earned sugar boost. The owner was very proud ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Central » Coimbra October 24th 2017

On the banks of the river Mondego, Coimbra is famous for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. Among the many archaeological structures dating back to the Roman era, when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium, are its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255) still remain. During the Late Middle Ages, with its decline as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a m... read more

. Our venture to the north of Portugal (and over the border). The collective ‘episodes’ (this being the fourth) describe our journey from our departure from Oz, our arrival in London from the 3rd week of May and onto Portugal for a journey into the Portuguese culture and landscape. In the few weeks available to us, we cannot experience 'everything'. Even so, we'll do our best to enjoy all that is available. This 'episode' describes our 'experience' as we make our way to the north of Portugal. We attach a few pics to give a flavour of our journey, and some may 'flow over' past the dialogue. If we do this, you may need to manually go to the 'spillover' page to see them. As always, if you want to 'see' more detail in an accompanying ... read more
