Yes, we went back to Sintra. We all decided that we really wanted to see the Quinta da Regaleira and the initiation portal that we didn't get to see on our visit a few days ago since it was crazy busy after the forest fires and closures. We decided to change up our plans and head to Sintra again after packing up before going to Aveiro for a 7:30pm Check-in deadline time. It was going to be close but we were going to make it happen. When we pulled into the parking lot, we were pleasantly surprised to see way fewer cars than on the previous visit. A good omen! After a mad dash for a washroom for the kids (the worst part about being a tourist), we jumped on a bus and were at the ... read more

Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal . True it has two canals . One the Grande Canal and the other a lesser one . That is where the similarity ends. The road to Aviero is littered with white salt pans . It is difficult not to understand what the primary industry is . Apart from fishing that is. It is also known quite rightly as Portugals capital of salt production. We had read up on the history of the place and it sounded fairly interesting for a place to stop at for a short stay. As we entered the town we could see the motorhomers parked up. We drove around a roundabout, following Sallys instructions but took the wrong exit. We could still see the motorhomes but they were the other side of the ... read more

We took a day of rest from our frantic travels and went to visit Maria's cousins, Maria and Manuel. In a matter of minutes, an offer for lunch. Now, here I should make mention of Portuguese food. It is very good. It is also very much concerned with meat. Great slabs of meat, most likely fried and served with potatoes that are very often deep fried. On a day of abstinent prudence, one will eat great slabs of fish. For about a week it's a party of carnivourous gluttony washed down with fizzy glasses of vinho verde. Then, one morning, your entire being cries out for a salad, or a sprig of parsley if nothing else. So, back to the offer for lunch. I sat with an ear to the kitchen. All was silent for a ... read more

Adventures with the Verdades continued: Coming home from Aveiro, I decided to say thank you to this wonderful family the best way I know how, by cooking up a grand feast. The meal was simple, Coq au Vin being something of a standby in my repetoire. But taking over the kitchen was a bit of a trick. Since my arrival at the Casa Verdade, I went about as I do, washing the dishes here and sweeping the floor there. In Latin cultures it is uncommon for a man to do such things, but after some explanation by Maria, the family settled into the uneasy presence of this foreign man who enjoys puttering around the ol' hearth and table. After a time, folks even seemed to appreciate my efforts. All, that is, except Marianna, the Dame de ... read more

After the grand snooze, it was up and at 'em and on the road to Aveiro. This is another little fishing village that has lent itself to tourist pursuits. Aveiro is a city of canals and bridges, waters plied by colourful boats (barques) and home to salieneras. Salienaras are facilities where salt is extracted from ocean water and then turned into a vast variety of products, some for munching and some for scrubbing. Portuguese people have a great love of salt. It has been used since olden days to preserve cod and many varieties are produced for use on the table. There is the usual bleached white type, but also brown salts, salts flecked with black, grey salt and lovely coarse, chunky salts. When you begin to explore the world of salt, it can become something of ... read more

Aveiro, what a city. After our boat tour we walked around the back street. I had been here years before, but this time I was seeing Aveiro throw Kevin's eye's so every thing was new. We walked down a small street and found I would say a fancy restaurant. They had a tourist menu which includes soup, entree that comes with rice potatoes, salad and what ever meat you want. Kevin had grilled steak with fried egg (portuguese eat eggs with almost every thing) rice, home made fries (no pre- frozen here) and salad plus wine, coffee and a dessert for 12 euros not bad right. And we got to enjoy this under on a very sunny afternoon. After lunch we went to the fish market which was constructed by non-other then Eiffel, yes the same one as ... read more

Oh my God, I just realised I have been away from my blog for almost 6 months!? It’s a record! I wish I could say I have busy travelling, but most of the time I have been working hard, and receiving with a smile the pleasant surprises and twists that 2008 has brought me so far ;-) Let me recall: I ended 2007 with a flash of luck, I almost lost the train to Antwerp, which luckily happened to be delayed (ufa!), and I started the year, yes, in peaceful Belgium, away from the craziness of the fireworks of the Low Lands, and in a very civilised ‘Black and White party.’ February took me to Portugal (‘as saudades ...’) and suddenly everything changed ... when I realised I was taking a break and getting myself in ... read more
