Today was our last full day on Terceira. It's hard to believe our week is almost over! The weather looked like it was going to be perfect, mid-60s and sunny. We planned to walk around Angra, hopefully see inside some churches, do some shopping and eat. As most places don't open until 10, we ate a slightly later breakfast and sat on the balcony until heading out.
We started our morning at a little store tucked away along the sea wall that sells handmade embroidery and other made in the Azores items. I was lucky and found a cute little hand carved nativity set to add to my collection! From here we walked down to the Misericordia Church, hoping it would be open this time. Luckily it was and we were able to get a short "tour" from the volunteer lady. The tour was really just her explaining the history of how the church came to be there and the hospital that came before it. Then we were free to walk around. The exterior is much more impressive than the interior, but it was quiet and cool inside. There are catacombs under the church, but they are not open to
the public at this time.
From here, we wandered back up to the main cathedral and found that was open as well. The inside was very dark and not interesting at all. It seems the exteriors of the churches are more impressive than the interiors, at least from the two experiences I had on the island.
We at lunch at Cais de Angra, a restaurant right by the marina. We got there a little after noon and there were very few people so we were able to get a table outside. Luckily our waitress spoke some English and brought us the menu. Mom really wanted the hake (a local fish) dish, but we were told the only fish options at the moment were the cod or the octopus. She went with the cod! I had the lunch special, a burger with a mushroom sauce and fries. The burger was huge and the sauce was delicious. The fries weren't anything spectacular but that's ok. It was a good meal with a nice view. And we probably won't have dinner since we had such a large lunch. That seems to be the theme for meals on this trip, later larger
lunches and no dinner. Last night we walked into Angra and got some small spinach quiches with fresh orange juice for our dinner. Those were really good!
After lunch, we finished our shopping and headed back to the hotel. It was so nice out so we went and sat by the outdoor pool to soak up the sun. I've enjoyed relaxing on the balcony, sitting out on the sea wall or having tea up in the large bar area. As one of the shop ladies said today, it's less stressful here!
Our bags are all re-organized and everything fit back in plus whatever we bought here to bring back. Tomorrow the bus comes at noon to take us back to the airport. As long as this week's winter storm clears out of Boston, we'll be on our way back around 4PM. Staying overnight in Boston and then an early morning flight back to O'Hare. I will be sad to leave this relaxing place, but glad to get home!

Good luck in Boston!
Everything's shut down here--but that's Washington. Jordan is thrilled--it's her first snow day this year, and on her birthday! Your Azores adventure sounds fascinating, and I've loved the blog.
