The Azores make for a great European destination due to the short 4 hour flight from Boston. However, you first have to get to Boston if you don't already live there. My mom and I chose a 4:30 PM Jet Blue flight out of O'Hare. As our travel date approached, so did a bomb cyclone and I waited nervously to see if the latest round of snow would be out of Boston before we arrived. Luckily for us, the storm came and went on Tuesday and our flight was not cancelled or delayed. Jet Blue no longer has free bag check, but they still provide ample leg room, free gate check if the flight is full (lucky for us ours was!) and free snacks. This flight was uneventful and we arrived in Boston on time with almost three hours before our next flight!
Azores Airlines leaves out of the international terminal at Boston Logan but it was connected to the Jet Blue terminal so we did not have to go through security again. We waited at the gate and were finally able to board for our 11 PM departure. We discovered Azores Air is not a comfortable long haul flight.
There was very little leg room and the seats were not very wide. There was no in flight entertainment, but there was a dinner. I was exhausted by this point, having gotten up at 4 to go to work, worked 8 hours and then went to the airport. So I was ready to attempt to sleep. Well, I had my eyes closed for the entire flight but I don't think I slept at all. About three quarters of the way through we hit some turbulence and it was pretty bumpy for quite awhile. That was not enjoyable and I was glad I hadn't eaten the dinner! Eventually we landed in Terceira's small airport. I always love when they bring the stairs to the plane and you get to disembark on the tarmac. In my opinion, it's a little more exciting and sophisticated of an arrival!
This was the easiest customs experience ever. We got off the plane, showed the passport to the customs agent and walked out. There were no forms and no questions about why you were there and for how long. Our hotel shuttle bus pulled up right as we exited the airport so that was even
better. The airport is about 20 minutes from Angra do Heroismo, where our hotel is located. The drive was very scenic with hills, rock walled pastures and farmers out milking their cows. And then, much to our dismay, the room was not ready at the hotel and wouldn't be ready until 2!
To pass the time, we walked outside to see the outdoor pool and look at the ocean, took some short naps, went into the city to find some food and then came back to wait some more. Finally, the room was ready! I was so excited to finally take a shower. I'm even more excited to go to bed. And tomorrow we can start exploring!
