10th April
A cloudy start, packed up & left for the south west. We diverted to get supplies & the road brought us back on track through forests of eucalyptus & cork oak. We came out of the hills into orange groves & there was obviously blossom about as the perfume was smashing. In this part of the world there are plenty of motorhomers but I think most camp wild as they aren’t in the sites much. As we approached the site there were plenty of walkers & camping cyclists & some hitchhikers.
Once again the site is in pine woods, very rustic but nice all the same. I later went to reception & asked the lady, who was born in Germany (don’t) & multilingual, if she would help find out with the police exactly what we could do to avoid more trips to police stations for statements & bless her she said if she couldn’t phone them she would go herself to the next town & ask them there when she finished work, it was where she lived. I told her that I had prepared our statement & could email everything along with photos of wounds. Hopefully we
will find out tomorrow.
After lunch we took the bikes into town. Part way down the road were about 20 goats & 40 sheep along with the farmer...& with 3 loose dogs. Pardon me but FFS! All three were pretty big, non pedigree, 2 seemed docile with 1 barking at us & approaching, head down. With our protestations & despite the farmer saying no problemo, we just turned & scooted. Better part of valour & all that ie we were terrified! We went a different route but on the way I put a load of rocks in one of my panniers & a couple in my pocket. Not going to be caught out...difficult to carry pointy pole on the bike.
We stumbled across a pottery shop. Oh dear...Cathy went in & we’ll inevitably go back but pottery & rocks in panniers don’t mix, fortunately! Ha..for now. Saw the fort on the end of the peninsula & wondered how to get to the beach where the surfers were in the waves. Found the lane, went down onto the rocks & sat watching the ‘young dudes’ surfing in huge waves. Pleasant way to spend time...
Home & it was
cooling....but I cooked some big prawns on the griddle outside. Fantastico & yummy! A couple of young lasses, one German, who spoke good English & one Spanish, came along & asked if I could blow up their bed. I asked if they had a V2 rocket to hand. Just can’t resist, ha! Got the tyre pump out & sorted it for them. A few tent campers came in late ish, mainly surfers, walkers & cyclists. They all disappeared after putting their tents up, there must be an it venue in town as there a few surf shops.
Later, we also devised a defensive plan using bikes & aforementioned rocks, just in case; sad but true... paranoid? Moi? Absolutely...
Tomorrow it’s a lie in & a trip out to Lagos with a work colleague, David, from oooh 20 years ago which will be tremendous & can’t wait to see him! He now lives here & has offered to show us around...lunch on me of course. Which reminds me, I’ve been retired just over 10 ye
