We passed through many small and a few not-so-small towns on our way to Lagos where will stay for two days. We booked our bus and accommodation the night before. Much cheaper. Live and learn or is it travel and learn? It was a gastronomic time for us today particularly 1 – 3.30pm. Absolutely gastronomic. Lagos is a beautiful place in southern Portugal’s Algarve region where the glorious beaches dominate. More of that tomorrow. The marina stands out in the town centre with yachts of all sizes moored and small motorized tenders ferrying tourists on various sea tours. From our brief stay so far we can see that Lagos is a lively town with numerous eateries and as the weather is sunshine tourists like ourselves are in our element. We are eagerly looking forward to tomorrow. ... read more

Tuesday! Time for our trip down to the southern coast of Portugal, the Algarve region. Mike and I were so excited, having been planning this little outing since we decided to go to Portugal. Unfortunately, we hadn't planned on the rain. It was pouring as we got ready to leave, it poured while we sat in traffic with our Uber, it poured and it poured. Sigh. No problem, we will be there for three days and there has to be sun some of the time. First thing, the rental car: Mike found, on line, such a deal! $11/day for a Mercedes sedan...plus a little something here, plus a little something there. Oh, the person at the agency spoke no English but we managed with a lot of sign language, pointing, and knowledge of a couple key ... read more

We've arranged to meet Barbie in Albufeira and then drive to the town of Lagos which is on the coast about fifty kilometres west of here. We arrive at the meeting point a few minutes early. We can't park, so we drive slowly down through the maze of one way lanes in the old part of town, and end up in the main square. An angry man appears in front of us waving his finger, and the message is clear; we can't go any further. We do a U-turn and try to get out of the maze via a different route, until our path's blocked again, this time by a row of steel bollards. Issy gets out and guides me as I attempt another U-turn in the narrow street. We spot a lady standing in amongst ... read more

A day to Sagres (the "so-called", end of Europe). The town was small and apparently accommodates to a lot of surfers. We walked around the fort and then drove over to the other point (Cape St Vincent's) where the big lighthouse was. I couldn't believe the difference in the temperature at the lighthouse!! The breeze blowing off the Atlantic was MUCH cooler (almost cold). Vendors were selling big "rugged-looking" shirts and ponchos, as well as a lot of ceramics. We left the lighthouse and headed for a restaurant that had been highly recommended on Trip Adviser. We had a couple cold beers and split an order of sardines between us. The total bill was 13€. :-o The meal came with olives, bread and a nice salad that we split between the two of us. All in ... read more

Took a walk around town this morning rather than on the beach. Saw some very different areas of the city and walked through a cemetery (a little morbid, but always interesting). Enjoy.... read more

Went to see the world’s largest “Sand City” today. This area hosts the FIESA International Sand Sculpture Festival every year. When we first arrived, I wasn’t too impressed; however, once we got past the large sculpture blocking our view, we realized how big the place was! OMG. I couldn’t believe the number of sculptures. I provided some of the write-ups that were at each of the sculptures. Each one had a plaque that explained the work and gave the name(s) of the artist(s) and where they were from. Some of the sculptures are pretty self-explanatory. The American guy who did his of Trump was quite interesting (even down to the comb-over). :-) I went out online to watch videos of how this type of sculpting is done, pretty amazing! Here is the link to one in ... read more

We drove down to Ponte da Piedade today. OMG. Absolutely amazing!! Again, the photos don’t do it justice! The altimeter on my phone said we were at about 140 ft at the top. You’ll see how scary it could be as you’re standing on the edge of the dirt looking down to the sea and rocks below!! There was a very nice lighthouse and those of you who know me know that I snapped many photographs of it. I had a total of over 50 photographs of the entire area, but I won’t bore with all of them. I also took a short video that shows the ocean waters as they come into a hole, but unfortunately am not able to post it to my blog.... read more

We departed Patricia’s around 4:00am headed for the Chunnel. We had reservations for a 7:50am departure, however, because we arrived early and there was space on the train, we got on the 6:20am train. This was good because that meant we would get into Bayonne, that much sooner. The train ride over was uneventful. The weather was dreary & misty (told by the rain drops on the car windows visible in my pictures) when we arrived in Calais. I drove until about 9 and then Gene took over. That allowed me time to snap photos. Unfortunately, not real sure of actually what is in the picture or where I took them. J They appeared to be a photo opp at the time. We didn’t encounter too much traffic until we got into Bordeaux. There was some ... read more

Geo: 37.1019, -8.67324Today we headed to the southwest corner of Portugal. We took the fast toll highway. Along the way we stopped at Alcantilha to see a unique church whose interior is lined with human bones. The bones and skulls that can be seen are those of over 1200 Carmelite monks that were exumed from the nearby church cemetery when the ossuary was built in 1816. The alleged purpose of this Chapels of Bones is to emphasize the brevity of human existence and the need to live a good life to avoid the eternity of hell. A more likely purpose may have been to free up space in the cemeteries! We continued on to Lagos, from which we will kayak along the Ponta da Piedade. The Ponta da Piedade is a group of rock formations along the ... read more
