Southern Portugal 24 August 2013

After leaving Lisboa (Lisbon) and after an easy but long drive we found a camping park about 15 kms east of Portimao which was a few kms from the coast. It was called Camping Canelas. Wow, was this a surprise package. Perhaps because it was out ‘in the middle of nowhere’ and it was the summer holidays still, the camp site had a lot going on.

As we were sitting having dinner, we heard live music being played. We went to investigate and found there was a singer and guitarist with electronic backing performing for everyone. There was a big dance floor and as there were a lot of Portuguese and Spanish people, it didn’t take them long to start dancing. Tom and I got up and danced, trying to remember our Spanish dancing lessons!! It was a lot of fun. Dead on 12MN the music stopped. Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos.

The next morning we drove Cape de Sao Vincente which is the most westerly point of Europe. We then saw the beautiful coastline from Sages to Lagos – wow, 12 Apostles in Australia, eat your heart out!!!! There were multiple cliffs, coves and sandstone rocks surrounded by the sea. There were fortresses perched up on cliffs. We visited the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina de Ribamar.

The whole area was stunning. All of the towns and villages and the city of Lagos and Silves had white washed buildings which has been continued from the early Moores. We visited Porta de Piedada with its caves and arches along the coast.

This area is known as the Algarve region which is very popular holiday area. It is however, not as busy as northern Spain. The climate is mild all year round. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.

We were now off back to Spain
