All aboard
Russell at the outset of our 4 hour sea fishing expedition.Today has been an unexpectedly delightful day!! We had booked the boys for a 2-hour morning fishing excursion with no other real plans for the rest of the day. Late last night the company sent us an email asking us would we be ok with a free upgrade to the 4-hour fishing trip. Well, yes, we would be ok with that. So, we got an early start off to Alvor which is only 10 minutes away and the boys got on their boat at 8:30 and headed off for a 1/2 day of fishing excitement!
For this paragraph, I (Nigel) will take over writing. The fishing was an absolute blast. There was constant action. You were either re-baiting your hook, getting a nibble, striking to hook a fish, or else someone else was reeling one in. There was always something going on. I had worried there would be long stretches of patient boredom. Not the case. We pulled up several different kinds of fish. The littlest ones we used as bait or threw back. Back to Lori...
Meanwhile, Rachel and I headed off down the pier for a few hours of girls time on the beach. It was pretty

Garrrrrrrr!
Russell won the award by far for longest fish with this super long point Garfish. We ate it later. Delicious.quiet when we got there and was getting busier by the time we left, but it was such a huge beach (several km long) that there was lots of space for everyone. We headed back to meet the boys for 12:30 and got there just as their boat was docking. They disembarked and I watched them dump a pail FULL of fish onto the dock. Nigel and Russell had made friends with an English guy named Eric and his son and niece and nephew. The boat company has a connection with a restaurant on the pier and they will clean and cook your fish for you! Nigel and Eric made plans to stay after the boat trip and eat all the fish. The other people on the boat were not interested (they had all the fish they could eat at their hotel). So, Eric and Nigel quickly drove up to where Eric was staying with the rest of his family and friends (there were 10 of them altogether) and brought them down to eat fish with us. It was a fantastic meal and the 3 English families were super nice and fun. There were lots of mackerel to eat, one

Eric and friends
We made friends with these 3 families from Blackpool and Redding and spent the rest of the day on various patios. I drove Eric up to his hotel and we got the rest of the gang to come help us eat all the fish we caught.trigger fish, one gar, and some grouper. There was more than enough for 14 people! The only fish they didn't cook for us was the octopus which they said can't be prepared from fresh (something about must be first frozen and then prepared....our theory is that they took our octopus and sold it....) Anyways, we ended up spending a few hours at lunch, eating, drinking and then drinking some more. They were a really nice group of people. Their kids (two 16-year old boys, a 15-year old girl and a 13-year old boy) were really nice too and became instant friends with our kids. The older boys eventually went back to their hotel and the remaining four wandered off for a while and had ice cream and played on the beach by the pier (catching crabs, sea snails, etc). Eventually, the adults settled the bill and ended up continuing the party at another establishment a little further along the pier. We stayed until 6 pm. Exchanged emails and took lots of photos. This was an unexpectedly very pleasant surprise way to spend an afternoon. Made some new friends and had a lot of laughs!
Back home to Portimao and

(Some of) our catch
We caught Blue Mackerel, Horse Mackeral, Gar, sardines, an octopus (not pictured) and 3-4 others I can't pronounce. All delicious.can not believe we have to head out tomorrow! Another vacation full of adventures and lots of fun!
