Je me calme. Je ... read more

#23 – Slice the marrow, sprinkle with salt, pepper and olive oil, then grill for ~20 minutes. Serve with grilled ocypki and cranberry sauce (ocypki is Polish smoked sheep’s cheese). There are few reasons for an alarm to be waking you at 2:30am. That’s more a time for going to bed than getting up. One of the reasons I would, and did, get up at that time, would be the chance of seeing a magical animal. I’ve had a thing for bison ever since seeing one in High Park in Toronto. That one was in a pen, which made me quite sad as it was such a huge majestic beast. I later found out that we have bison in Europe, but not many. There are about 2500 in the wild, most of which are in Poland. ... read more

"Hello. Speak English?" "No" "Tak. C'est pas grave. Ticket Suwalki. Tak?" "Suwałki?" "Tak. Suwalki." "Suwałki?" "Tak" .... Me voilà donc qui me retrouve avec le ticket espéré, celui qui me mènera à Suwałki. Suwałki, la Fin du Monde. "Suwałki? It's the end of the world Suwałki!" que m'avait dit, sans réelles émotions, une des rares serveuses qui avait osé me dire quelques mots en anglais.

We woke up at 5.45 am as I had set the alarm but forgotten to change the timezone on my iPad. It had snowed overnight. Eventually we got a call at 6.45 am, davening at 7 am, breakfast and on the bus by 8 am was to be the schedule every day. Except today - the bus needed to be repaired. So we used our time to go round the breakfast table introducing ourselves. Of course this wasn’t all serious with lots of banter, so we started the day smiling - which was a good thing too as it was to be a hard day. On the bus to Tykocin. Before the war Tykocin was a town with a very large Jewish community. We walked through the snow to the synagogue which is now a museum. ... read more

Vcera nakoniec len lezanie v posteli a citanie knihy. Bohuzial, zatvoreny, bo dnes je sviatok, den ustavy. Nastastie bol cestou otvoreny mensi sklep (obchodik). Do stareho mesta to bola len jedna zastavka elektrickou, resp stacilo prejst most. Rozhodol som sa ... read more

We have had a very pleasant time in Warsaw over the last 3 nights and our apartment in Stare Bielany has worked out very well both from a comfort point of view but also from its location close to the Metro and in the suburbs rather than being too close to the city. Ewa wasn't home when we were ready to leave but we phoned her and she arrived shortly afterwards from being out shopping. She had bought us coasters with a Warsaw theme as a reminder of our stay in her apartment. She is a lovely lady so nice to meet and talk to. We know absolutely nothing about our destination of Augustow and chose it because it was around 200km from Warsaw, which is a comfortable days drive for us,and the largest town with accommodation close to ... read more

We were kayaking on the Sokołda river on an upper part of the river that was not normally navigable, it being too shallow. Recent heavy rain had raised the level of the river allowing us to kayak on this quiet upper section. However, the other side of the coin was it was pretty narrow with constant tight bends. It was when we got stuck in a diagonal fashion by the powerful current wedging the ends of the boat into the reeds, that I was able to assess the depth of the river. A bit too deep and somewhat impractical for putting an oar in to shove us back in motion! … …We had started out from Supraśl near Białystok, with kayaks in tow. Our host offered us the option of starting further upstream to have a ... read more

The train, a little railcar, bumped steadily along the worn tracks in deepest Podlasie in a stultifying heat. The sky was a threatening grey, with the air heavy and we were heading deliberately to the edge of Poland - the frontier land of the east. We had no exact idea of our final destination that day, just that it was an invitation to a place far away from the noise and bustle of the city and was tucked away in the middle of nowhere. I had checked the forecasts for the day – severe storms with high winds and the potential for tornadoes were not just forecast, but on their way, and my main hope was that we would not get caught in a boiling atmospheric maelstrom whilst waiting for our lift from our friends. BC: Belarussian Comfort? After our few days in Freiburg, all too soon we were to set off for Poland. It was my birthday, but sunny solar Freiburg wasn’t so sunny and we didn’t go on the planned trip into the mountains of the Black Forest lying just behind the city. Instead we had a stroll up the Schloßberg before a meal at the veggie restaurant in the city centre. There you pile up your plate and then they weigh it: good job they don’t do that on North Sea Ferries. In the evening we departed Freiburg on the night express to Warsaw. We packed up and said goodbye to David who was heading back to England the next day. At the railway station as the train rolled in I looked vainly for the Polish carriages ... read more
