Stare MiastoThis is the oldest historic district of the city and one of Warsaw's most prominent tourist attractions. It was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Warsaw's Old Town was established in the 13th century. During the Invasion of Poland (1939), much of the district was badly damaged by the German Luftwaffe and immediately after the Warsaw Uprising (August-October 1944) what had been left standing was systematically blown up by the German Army. After World War II, the Old Town was meticulously rebuilt. As many of the original bricks were reused as possible.
Mały Powstaniec (Little Insurgent)The statue is of a young boy wearing a helmet too large for his head and holding a rifle. It represents the child soldiers who fought and died in the Warsaw Uprising. The statue is reputed to be of a fighter who went by the pseudonym of Antek, who was killed around the 8th August 1944. Antek was aged 13.
