hello, or czesc
from mighty poland!
im finally here!
i've had the most amazing week!
i was the hostel in warsaw doing my teaching course for the past week and yesterday i was picked up by my host family and now im settling into my new polish way of life, i also start school tomorrow!!!!!!!
its been such an amazing week i dont know where to begin!
i got in from prague last friday morning at about 7am by bus... so needless to say i was a bit grumpy from the bus trip and my first impression of warsaw was that it was drab, and boring, and i really didnt want to be living here for the next 5 months or so, but after, even the first day, of exploring the city a little bit I've completely changed my mind! Warsaw is such a diverse and amazing city and ive only explored a few tiny bits of it but there is still so much more to see and do here... im never going to be bored here!!!
I also met all the other gappers this week
and everyone is really cool! we all got along so well, I cant wait to visit everyone at their placements all over poland, we've even started up our own warsaw gang, us guys living in warsaw, well by us guys i mean the 2 new zealand chicks and me started this up the other night possibly under the influence of polish beer! but basically ive got a good group of people to hang out with here!
im also starting to understand why people say its so easy to become an alcoholic in poland, the beer is extremely good (this coming from me who is not much of a beer drinker at all) and its so cheap, sometimes about $2 for a decent beer (or piwo) so its so easy to go, its ok buy another 10 its only $20 australian! but this is BAD!! hahaha
but i have been exploring things besides the alcohol here... a group of us went to the russian markets the other day, its a bit market here is warsaw but its a little bit dodgy, its divided into rings and the outer rings are not too bad, food, clothes,
handbags, then maybe bootleg cds and dvds then the inner circle has rifles, ninja stars, HUGE knives and a whole lot of random soviet junk, oh and whispered offerings of spiritos and vodka! (by the way spiritos is 95% alcohol, i havent tried any yet, i think i need to prepare myself!) but anyway. We were checking out this market, i was with this other gapper who i swear is the most accident prone person in the world, he dropped a watch at one of the stands on the top level and it broke another one but he didnt realise this, and the guy was yelling at us in polish to buy it but he didnt understand so he kept saying no, then the other guy jumped out from behind the stall and grabbed the other gapper and he wouldnt let us go until he payed, meanwhile about 10 polish guys were circling us, i then explained what was going on and with full understanding we payed the guy and QUICKLY left... it's pretty funny to look back on, who else has had an experince like that!!! hahahaha
My host family is amazing as well, there's Joanna,
the mother who speaks fantastic english and is so nice,Pawel, the father whose english isnt fantastic but he's a top guy, Daniel, 11 years old, loves his sports, he speaks a little english but not a lot but i still manage to communicate with him, and Karol their 5 year old son (yes Karol is a polish boys name, it means charles i think) and he is so cute and cheeky (he kind of reminds me of lukey, my nephew) he speaks no english although he sometimes comes out with random english phrases like he started counting in english at breakfast today
yesterday i had the best day with them, we all went and played soccer in the park and i had such a ball (no pun intended) then johanna cooked us up an amazing tart for dinner, i played cars with Karol half the night, talked to Joanna heaps, and watched batman begins in polish with the family.... it was just simple little things but it was just so much fun, its so nice to have some sort of family life again... and also to be unpacked... thats right, my bag is unpacked for the first
the palace of science and culture
i so live like 10 minutes from this now... how cool is that! time in 3 months and my clothes have been machine washed.... ahhh so luxurious!haha
also polish hospitality is amazing! i went to my host teachers for dinner on wednesday night and she fed me SO much, she just kept offering me cake after cake after cake, if i dont come back home fat, i'll be dissapointed!
so im settling in fine, i've got some great aussie friends in warsaw, and around poland, a small group of polish friends who were our 'practice students' at our teaching school, a fantastic polish family, and i have even managed to score a tutoring job already!!!! This country is great 😊
anyway i must be off ive got class tomorrow like i said and i think joanna has just about cooked dinner for us all
so do widzenia
xoxo
