Today we had our formal Collette coach tour of Warsaw. We started at Łazienki Park. It was originally a royal preserve laid out with palaces and monuments. It became a public park for Warsaw in 1918. Many interesting items were to be found here. At the entrance, a monument honors Józef Piłsudski (1867-1935), a leader in the Polish independence movement and twice head of state. "On the W. side of the Plac Krasiński ar ethe Judicial Archives and the handsome Krasiński Palace, built in the Italian Renaissance style in 1692. Bequeathed by Count Krasiński to Poland, the palace was used in the 18th cent. as the meeting-place of the Chamber of Deputies. POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews - Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich. Opened in 2013. The museum, located on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto, traces the story of the Jewish people in Poland. "The museum entrance is fashioned to resemble the Hebrew letter tav (ת), which stands at the beginning of such words as tarbut (culture) and teva (ark)". DSC_0136

Palace Under the Tin Roof - Pałac Pod Blachą. Built 1651-1656, rebuilt in 1698-1701 and 1948-1949. Part of the Royal Castle grounds. It was the first building in Warsaw to have a tin (copper) roof. What was particularly impressive about Warsaw is that Poland worked so hard to rebuilt it after World War II. Nearly 90 per cent of the city was destroyed. It took them decades, but they put it all back together. That took determination.
