Woke up before the alarm this morning, mostly because I didn't really sleep. I kept checking the time every hour or so until just before 4am when I decided to give up and just get up. Got my stuff, left the hostel and took a cab in the pouring rain to the night bus to Prestwick airport. The cab driver had me a little worried when he asked if I'd already gotten my bus ticket, and I'd said no. He said I might not get a seat on the bus, as he'd seen people being turned away on other occasions. Fortunately, Tues. morning is not a particularly popular bus time, as the bus left the terminal half-empty. Made it to the airport in plenty of time, checked in, and then went to eat my breakfast. I'd ... read more

Decided I'd go ahead and turn 24 this year. I had a wonderful birthday week with lots of emails from friends and family, special outings with friends here in Poland and a great birthday party at a local pub, Salvador, on Saturday. A birthday to remember. (And no, I didn't follow the Polish tradition of buying everyone else drinks on MY birthday. I supplied the cake and awesome dance moves, which was worth more than any amount of booze.)... read more

Again, I arrived in the evening at the train station. I'm getting pretty sick of long train journeys especially since I can't do anything but sleep on them. I thought I could update my journal or something but all I get is a headache. Bleh. My host met me at the station but he didn't expect me to arrive so late (it was like 8pm) and had plans to see a movie with a friend. I'm not too into movies and I didn't really mind so I wandered around Wroclaw for a couple of hours before setting up shop in the Mc Donalds since it was the only thing open in the main square at the time. When my host was done, he got me and we went back to his place. His mom was super ... read more

Merry Christmas from Poland! On Wednesday, Dec. 24th, I took the train from Wroclaw to Kostrzyn Nad Odra to meet Rick and Jakub, 2 of Bri's college friends. Jakub is Polish (went to high school and college in the US, now works in DC) and his family still lives in Poland. Jakub's family was very welcoming and I enjoyed my few days in their home. The train was quite full on the journey to Kostrzyn - I had to stand next to the door (cold!) for the first half of the 5 hour trip - but I got a seat after a number of passengers got off in Zielona Gora. The big Christmas celebration happens on the 24th in Poland. Dinner consists of 12 dishes (not meat), including 5 fish specialties. The Konysz menu consisted of ... read more

Tis the season for some parties and snowy getaways. I attended my first Polish birthday party early in the month. Michal (Mee-how) turned 23 and hosted a great party. For a Polish birthday, the bday boy/girl is responsible for paying for everyone else's drinks at a bar. They also supply snacks and are to ensure all guests have a lovely time. So I announced that I would NOT be hosting a Polish birthday party. No way am I buying drinks for everyone else on my birthday. Poor Michal was stressed making sure everyone was having fun on HIS birthday. The Speed school held a teachers' weekend get away in snowy Szcyrk (please note the lack of vowels). The resort was about 7 hours away from Wroclaw and we picked up about 50 other teachers from the ... read more

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving! I spent my Thanksgiving day at work... but I did enjoy some cheese pierogi and gelato in honor of the day. It has gotten cold in Poland - We've had a few snowfalls, but nothing sticks. The sun sets at about 4 pm, which isn't exactly uplifting. The aerial pictures of Wroclaw were taken from the top of a church bell tower on a very windy Polish Independence day (Nov. 11). Happy 90th, Poland! As it turns out, my grandmother, Dorothy "Mamaw" Trotter, is a few months older than Poland itself. Of course the Poles have been around a long time, but Russia, Germany and Austro-Hungary had their greedy hands in these lands for many moons. On the Independence day there was a strange parade - a mix of horses and motorcycles, neither ... read more

Due to harassment from someone who will remain nameless (Bri Keeney), here is the much anticipated Polish Halloween/election installment of my travel blog. To answer a few questions: NO, the Poles don't celebrate Halloween. The Poles celebrate All Saints' Day on Nov. 1. The vast majority of Poles spend the day with family traveling to the cemeteries where relatives are buried. This also meant that all the stores and restaurants were closed all weekend, which would have been handy to know beforehand. NO, I didn't bring a costume with me to Poland so I didn't have one to wear on Halloween. I did not think it would be a prudent choice to pack a suitcase full of props, costumes and practical jokes. YES, the Poles were interested in the election and for the most part were ... read more

Today is my last day in Poland. It rained alot and a penetrating cold mist filled the air; feels like November. I enjoyed the day, hunting gnomes and doing the last organization for flight tomorrow. I bought a scarf to keep warm while I wandered the streets. Time has gone back an hour and darkness seems to begin at four. Perhaps it is even more fun to hunt gnomes in the dark. ha ha Before my camera battery gives out, with all of the flash needed to capture these gnomes, I'll upload what I have. It occurred to me that I am in an enviable position, to play most of the day. The second day of any town is much easier. Lodging, food and internet sites are known, the streets seem shorter and the landscape makes ... read more

Wroclaw, home of 'the Red Baron' and lately over fifty gnomes are waiting for you to find them. This is my last stop in Poland. I'm in the German part of Poland and very few people speak English here. In fact, the international ticket agent at train station didn't speak English. Luckily a young customer understood that I was looking for day passes for trams and pointed me in direction of kiosks outside the building. I'm in a hostel with no washing machines, despite the fact that hostel-bookers advertised it as having free laundry. I couldn't get refund to move to another hostel, so that left me with the challenge of finding the one and only laundromat (not dry cleaner) in the city. Quite a feat. Hostel people said there were none, other hostel staff had ... read more

One of the questions in the Callan book I teach out of asks the students "Are there any castles in the town where you live?" The students ALWAYS answer no. Oh, really? I think these pictures tell a different story... And the much anticipated pictures of my castle - I live on the 3rd floor of a 5-floor block of flats. I live right off the Rynek, behind the Diesel store. Most of the tenants in my building are university students (or old ladies with annoying dogs whose barks echo around the building at 7 am, AWESOME). My flat is a studio and has everything I need - which is what people say when they live in weirdo apartments. My land-lady doesn't speak much English. Every time I see her she asks if I speak German ... read more
