Wroclaw in Lower Silesia has a beautiful town square. I was encouraged to visit this city on the way to Krakow and I am glad I did. The old town square is in an idyllic location near the river. This area of Poland was formerly German territory before WWII. The western boundaries of Poland expanded after the war and part of its eastern territory was taken over by the USSR.

Finally onto Krakow. Unlike lower Silesia, which seemed to have few tourists, Krakow was packed with tourists. I stayed at an apartment attached to a hostel, and the location was incredible--right in the middle of the central square of Kazimierz, the old Jewish district. Some of the restaurants hired musicians to perform at night, so I just opened my windows at night to listen to the lively performances in the street below. And nearby (next to the actual hostel building) there was a Hawaiian themed bar!
