For New Years we flew to a ski resort in Poland, for 7 days with friends and Catherine met up with us there. This year was really weird with the weather and even in London it was quite warm (13 degrees when its usually around 2 degrees) it meant that all over Europe there wasnt much snow and for the first year ever, there wasnt enough snow to go skiing where we were. It still snowed though so the city was blanketed in white, which was beautiful.. The highlight of that trip had to be where we went out to a snow covered forest and were taken through the forest on one horse open sleighs. It felt like we were on the set of 'The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe'. Amazing! There were 4 of ... read more

Sometimes I feel really lucky, not because of where I am or what I’m doing, but because everything just seems to fall into place. It makes me nervous, like that sudden rising feeling in an plane as it hits turbulence.. every time it rises up a little higher I get a bit more nervous anticipating the imminent drop that puts your stomach in your throat. Zakopane is the Queenstown of Poland. I didn’t decide to go until an hour or so before the bus left. It’s reputed to be quite expensive and touristy, and this year there’s no snow - There’s no snow in any of Poland, or much of Europe for that matter. Perhaps some northern hemisphere governments will take more notice of global warming when Santa’s sleigh is stuck in the mud. Sometimes I ... read more

Went to Zakopane which is located at the base of the Tatry Mountains. You may recall that I went to the High Tatras in Slovakia. Well this time I am on the Polish side. I wanted to do a nice 6-hour walk, so went to the Tourist Info who showed me a decent route from Kuznice to Gasienicowa Hala and then to Czarny Staw (pretty lake). I'm not exactly the world's fastest walker as I like to enjoy the scenery and take photos. Even so I got to the lake in 1.5 hours without raising a sweat. This wasn't good enough as I needed to burn off the many Czech beers and carbs I had ingested the previous week. So I decided to keep going and took the green route to Zadni Granat. I must explain ... read more

Hello everyone. We are still in Poland and progress with cycling has been a bit slow this last week. First we stopped in Krakow for a few days, then we came 90 miles here, to Zakopane, and have been here four whole days so far. It is a fairly touristy resort in the Tatra mountains which border Poland and Slovakia. In summer it is inundated with hikers and in winter packed with skiers. So we were hoping we would catch it at a quiet time but that has not been the case... The day before we left Krakow we visited the famous salt mines near the city. It's quite an interesting place. We were led around the greyish tunnels, hewn from salt (Simon tasted a wall to check). I learnt some unusual things. For example, have ... read more

Greetings from the Tatras! We are in Zakopane, which is on the Polish side of the Poland/Slovakia border. The Tatras are the biggest mountain range in these parts, and the Tatras are spoken of highly by Poles and Slovaks alike. So we had to check it out. A word of warning for those thinking of coming here - all such sightseeing (at this time of year) must be done before 11am when the clouds roll in, and remain for the rest of the day. Zakopane is a favourite holiday haunt for Poles, with various local traditions. One of them is Oscypek. When we arrived, we were extremely curious as to what the little things that street vendors were selling were. They looked like pork-pies and the locals seemed to be buying and eating them very qucikly. ... read more

Krakow - Zakopane (Bus) 12 August Oscypki - golden, round and of a home made appearance; stacked in piles atop traditional, wooden farmer’s carts to entice the passer by to buy this region’s specialty. They are mysterious to an outsider, looking like a light, puffed, sweet pastry - possibly filled with some kind of custard. We are both hungry and our intrigue had almost turned to obsession. part of our travelling is to experience the local delicacies. Having not yet had lunch, it seemed a good idea to order the largest size Oscypki on offer. Holding the Oscypki, it was heavier than custard filled pastry we imagined. Pehaps more like a Polish highland mince or vegetable filled treat. Satisfied that this better justified the relatively expensive 7 zloty price, and that it would serve as better ... read more

Went to Zakopane with Mother. 2+ hours to get there. In the winter, Zakopane is supposedly the skiing capital of Poland. I had 2 chances to go to Zakopane with my class. The first chance I passed on because I was totally wiped out from a whole week fo Polish lessons, and just the weekend before I had been on the 20+ bus ride in from Estonia.. Not in the mood to travel far. Then I hear from the folks who had gone that it wasn't exactly enjoyable, more like a forced march up the side of the mountain and then a treacherous retreat from its icy slopes. Some older lady with the wrong shoes ended up sliding on her ass down the hill. No thanks. I don't like frostbite on my delicate parts. So that's ... read more

I heard my lips uttering something I never thought possible: "I'm sad that it's the end of winter." Madness? Perhaps. But until now I had never experienced the mad rush of snowboarding. It's my new favourite thing to do and I wish I could send myself to a slope right now. Eight of us went to Poland to ski and snowboard. Zakopane is the main centre for snow sports in Poland and is about two hours south of Krakow and the mountains there mark the border with Slovakia. We were a bit of a rabble with very tenuous connections linking us all - my roommate was a guy who my friend's friend and boyfriend met after they met his sister while travelling! Luckily we all got along really well. We all shared a similar snowsport ability ... read more
