Our day started off with a city tour of Krakow. We went first to Kazimierz, the Jewish Quarter (and also the location where some scenes of 'Schindler's List' were filmed). There is a memorial in the center of the street commemorating the lives of the 65,000 Jews from Krakow who lost their lives during the Holocaust. Looking out at Birkenau from the railroad tracks... the barracks seen in the distance were used to house the thousands of slave-workers at the camp. Many of these buildings were either destroyed during the October 7, 1944 revolt or burned by the SS. They have since been rebuilt, using wood from the original buildings.

Prisoners were only allowed to use the latrines twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Toilets were simply holes in a concrete structure, lined up one next to the other. Prisoners were responsible for cleaning the latrines once they were full.
