If your kids are like mine and can get bored, and you’re sick of hearing them say it. Truthfully, you’re probably bored, too. If you forgot to create one of those
Pinterest-worthy “summer bucket lists,” don’t despair. There’s still time to salvage summer.
One activity that I do and is great for the family is canoeing. We have just come back from an Incredible canoeing trip to Norway with narrow fjords, majestic mountains and even taking in some sea adventures. We found that
Balestrand , was the most incredible and serene place to paddle down the river and have a great bonding experience with my family we got some grea canoes and advice from
https://www.padlespesialisten.no/categories/kano and it really made the holiday. If you aren’t convinced, here are three reasons I feel you
should definitely get your kids onto the water this summer .
It’s Exhausting That’s a weird thing to say, right? But when was the last time you went to bed feeling entirely spent and had the best night’s sleep of your life? Kids need that experience, too, and with traditional schooling and electronics, most of them lead pretty sedentary lives. They can’t even play in the front yard like they used to.
Canoeing requires a lot of physical activity, but it doesn’t all
happen at once. They may not even know they’re working so hard until that blissful moment they pass out without even asking for a drink of water. You win. They win. Sleep wins.
You Have To Work Together There’s more than one person in the boat. Everyone has to work together to keep that boat upright. Everyone needs to paddle. Even young kids can get the feeling that they’re helping (even if mom or dad is doing the bulk of the work).
Older kids can help paddle for real, pack bags and lunches, and figure out where to go over (mildly) rough water to get through to the end. Younger kids can dip a small paddle in the water without interfering too much with what’s going on but still feel like they’re “helping.” Everyone works together.
No Electronics Allowed And you don’t even have to be the bad guy! The water is!
It’s hard to argue with lost phones and iPads, so when you tell kids that if the boat topples that precious device will end up useless on the bottom of the river, they’ll likely listen. You can spend some quality time without being interrupted by notification pings, and your kids will get a day-long technology detox.
They might even remember that they like the outdoors. Many kids just need some prompting to put down the device and really see what’s around them and they’ll forget they ever had Roblox or Fortnight.
It’s good for you too because you can’t exactly play on your phone the entire time and drive a canoe. You need to spend some time away from technology, and a canoe trip is just the catalyst for getting everyone out.
The Takeaway Getting your kids (and yourself) outdoors is a vital part of your mental and physical health. Canoeing is the type of exercise that’s enjoyable and not too intense, but your body does experience the kind of exhaustion that helps you sleep and helps you work out kinks from sitting around all day.
You may be nervous about taking your kids on the water, but most canoe rental agencies have safety wear such as life jackets and can give you and your kids a quick lesson in what to do while you’re out on the lake or river.
The activity is best with older kids, but even younger kids can get in on the action in particularly calm water such as a lake. Pack a big lunch and plenty of snacks and plan to stay out as long as you can to take advantage of the scenery and the time together as a family.
