Due to pressures at work, I needed some me / quiet time. Initially, I had planned to go to Sweden to visit my sister and take a week to myself before visiting friends in Iceland. However, due to work and my sister's schedule, Sweden was off the table, but I decided to still take my Norway trip. I really started to look forward to my own solo vacation, the first time in 18 months and it was well worth it. I initially planned to do a lot of hiking, but since it was still considered the winter / off season, most of the trails looked either inaccessible, potentially too muddy, or just too plain cold. I definitely wanted a road trip and started to plan around visiting Flam, and as I was searching, I got into ... read more

Well it was our last full day in Norway and we tried to get the most out of it but like normally on your last day we ended up packing which seemed to take up most of the day, which is weird as I never unpacked in our Cell Block H. I just left my suitcase under the bed still full as no space in the wardrobe. We went to the briefing on what you need to do to leave the ship so all well on the western front. We had booked on a tour of the Marble Mines starting late afternoon so that was exciting and part of the trip was to go on the Atlantic Ocean Road. This road, only 5.2 miles long, took 6 years to build during which time it was hit ... read more

So we set off from Bergen at 8pm and during the night we stopped at Floro and Maloy which if I had not been told I would never have guessed as it was so smooth. I did not have a bad night’s sleep in Cell Block H on the day bed as our room only has one single bed and as Mike is getting on haha I thought the better of things and let him sleep in the bed (one in the bank for me then). Anyway, I was told that I should get up early as we will be stopping at a little place called Torvik and it is beautiful - dutifully I did this and if I am honest and truthful I could have had a bit more sleep as it might be beautiful ... read more

Well it started yesterday with, to be totally honest, a full day travelling to Bergen. This seems so weird as it is not that far but I suppose when you have to change in Amsterdam and have a couple of hours there it does take its toll. We arrived in Amsterdam and knowing that alcohol was really expensive on the ship, e.g a bottle of house wine £50, we thought we would have a beer in the terminal before we went to the gate - BIG MISTAKE as we did not envisage having to go through customs again. Now because we are not in the EU we had to queue up and not go through the electronic gates. Well when you have only 2 boarder guards on and we seem to have people with issues with ... read more

7th October Flam After a bumpy voyage from Stavanger on the North Sea we arrived in the early hours of the morning to the calm waters of the Aurlandsfjord. I set the alarm early to enjoy the scenery but it was pouring with rain and the mist was low over the mountains so it was back under the covers. We arrived in Flam around 10am, we were booked on the first tour for the journey on the famous Flam Railway which we have been on twice before; one time with snow on the ground another with blue skies and sunshine but today is was grey skies and very wet! The Flåm Railway was built between 1923 and 1940 in order to assure a transport route to the fjord from Bergen and Oslo. As one of the ... read more

8th October It was only 50 miles from Flam to Skjolden so at 7pm last night the Captain decided to leave Flam earlier than scheduled which meant we arrived in Skjolden around 11pm. All passengers were over the moon because it meant we were not moving through the night. We woke to a dry day, blue skies & beautiful snow capped mountains. Our tour today was not until the afternoon, so a late breakfast and then going on deck to the enjoy the magestic fjord scenery. We often don’t go to the restaurant for lunch but go to the lounge called the ‘Living Room’ where they serve small open sandwich & little fruit tarts, so along with a coffee that’s just enough. 1.15pm we head to the playhouse to have our tickets checked and receive our ... read more

6th October Stavanger After a nothing sort of day yesterday it was lovely to now be in Norway. Our first port of call Stavanger. It was still getting light as we arrived, all the white wooden buildings looking so pretty in the morning light. Our tour today was a boat trip cruising The Lysefjord. Sadly we hadn’t been on board for very long before the rain started. There was the opportunity to go up onto the top deck which I did do a couple of times but it was no fun in the heavy rain. The boat slowed down at several points of interest along the way. Pulpit rock, towering 1982 feet above the fjord- it’s bare rock tabletop shape is in stark contrast the the green slopes and mountainsides that surround it. There were 3 ... read more

So, what is it like in quarantine? First, you set your alarm an hour before going into port so you can see some of the scenery from your balcony. You pray the ship docks on the starboard side so that you can see into the city. Yeah, it did today. (Well really yesterday) One of the nurses comes and takes vitals in the morning. Then, you start your routine of room service, movies, reading, checking news and emails… for me a nap was also needed. (thank you Cathy for suggesting- In an Instance). After that Susan and I message back and forth and call on the ships phone. Yep, that is our day. Susan tries to do steps around her room. I don’t have a ton of energy. Then about 6, the DR calls to check ... read more

Well today started out good for me. I woke up in my separate room, they didn’t want me in the room with Susan. I do miss her though. My room is only a couple of rooms away from Susan and we can wave to each other on the balcony. I first headed to medical for my PCR test, then took off. I masked up and headed to the bus for the waterfall and catamaran excursion that we paid for. Susan’s excursion is being refunded. On the way up to the waterfall, the guide kept saying, you might not see it and we don’t have time to wait for the sun to burn off the fog. What??? We paid a lot of money for this. Well, when the bus arrived, it was still a bit foggy but ... read more

Well today is not what we expected. Susan woke up not feeling great so decided it was time to take a covid test. Boy it pop’d up positive too quickly. We both put on masks and I opened the door to the deck. Then I called the front desk and told them. They said medical would be contacting us shortly, Well,…. Medical opened an hour later and I called and they had not heard anything from the front desk. They asked us to show up at 9. We did and they did a rapid test on us both, Susan – positive, me – negative. They then did a PCR test for us both. Susan is quarantined in the room, I’m free to go about as long as I’m masked. I leave to go for a long ... read more
