So yesterday Christine and I did a thing. We hiked up to Pulpit Rock(Preikestolen---google it!). This hike is classified as "easy" to the humans of Norway. But let me tell you, it was anything but easy. After battling gravity the entire way up, we were greeted with the most magical view I've ever seen. See pictures. Surprisingly we aren't as sore as I thought we would be. Today we took a 6am ferry to stavanger. The ferry was lovely. Other than the sound of unaccompanied children shrieking....... :) enjoying the lovely city of Bergen now. More photos to follow suite ... read more

Day one and two was technically spent in the airport. From Ottawa. To Toronto. To London heathrow. To find out our flight to Norway was cancelled... so we fought and got out on a flight for 8pm instead of 11am.. We came up with a fun hashtag when stuck in heathrow. #nowaytonorway #fjordthegirls Our layover was less than desirable. That's ok. We purchased cards and kept ourselves "sane" and entertained. We might have been running on no sleep... but that's okay who can't stay up for 38 hours? When we got to Stavanger we were so pleasantly surprised. We landed at 1030pm local time. To find out that the sun was just setting (yes at 1030 pm). Sunrise is at 430. That was fun to find out. The hotel we booked is right downtown stavanger by ... read more

The big day had finally arrived! A first time cruise for Val and Keith to the Norwegian Fjords. After many years of being critical about cruising it was now time to experience the reality. Travelling with Val's sister, who was celebrating her 60th birthday with her family gave us added confidence because they take regular cruise holidays. We left Scotch Corner services on the A1 at 6am after an early alarm call. The Eavesway coach was very comfortable with ample leg room. We did not see our luggage again until we arrived at our cabin door on the Brittannia, P & O's pride and joy, in Southampton dock. What an enormous vessel towering over the quayside. The bathroom and our cabin were small but functional and it was just like staying in an enormous floating hotel ... read more

We need a dry day to do our hike to Pulpit Rock and it looks like the weather might provide it for us. We had a Skype call with Leigh at breakfast time and caught up on her news from home. We packed the backpack with supplies for the trail plus rain jackets, just on case. We have been using several websites that provide weather forecasts for the places we have been staying and each has predicted slightly different conditions meaning we take each with a grain of salt. Now that we are in Norway we have added the Government weather office website to our range and with it comes the best rain radar coverage we have had so far. A full page with what seems to be reliable rain radar. The other websites have had ... read more

We had a solid sleep despite the fact that the bed was an old fashioned double the type of which we haven’t slept together in for years. This is the only shortfall this apartment has. The washing in the bathroom with the under floor heating working dried nicely overnight. The same can’t be said for the weather outside as there is steady rain falling and the forecast looks like it will be wet for most of our drive to Stavanger. Loading the car up wasn’t pleasant with the rain falling and a flight of outdoor wooden steps to go and forth from the apartment to the car. We had two options to get to Stavanger, the E39, the main highway or an option we hadn’t previously considered until we took a closer look at the atlas ... read more

Taken 4 days to get here travelling through Holland, Germany and Denmark. Arrived into Norway via Kristiansand. A two hour drive has brought us into Lysebotn a small village at the end of the Lysefjord. The 8km road in drops from the south twisting ever down and seems to go on forever. The landscape driving up can only be described as luna and simply breathtaking. The view from our van this morning invigorate's us to move on with a seven hour journey to Flam with possibly a wild night stop on the way. We will try to find time to write more soon. Later campers.... read more

My new walking shoes are water proof, unfortunately I know this because it has rained all day. We knew this was likely but it’s a big change from yesterday, or maybe yesterday was a big change from normal, not sure. We waited out the worst of the weather, then when it seemed to be gentle rain walked the 2 km from the campsite, over the huge roadworks going on here into the city of Stavanger. It’s well known as a quiet harbour with Europe’s oldest collection of wooden houses just back from the harbour. It’s all very pretty, with well restored houses along narrow and at times steep streets. Lots of hanging baskets out to add to the prettiness. The harbour view was somewhat spoiled by two huge cruise ships that were docked. This also meant ... read more

Blog 5 Kristiansund/Atlantic Ocean Road/Trondheim/Bergen/Stavanger/Oslo Slow start today for our overnight stop in Kristiansund – we had 190kms to cover but now we were used to calculating the correct time for the little windy roads. Heading out of Alesund we encountered lots of roadwork including a very large bridge being built. You have to give it to the Norwegians – they are terrific bridge and road tunnel builders. Drove in the direction of a town called Molde. The ferry crossing over the fjord was once again another lovely way to pass 40 mins. We were also in the habit of heading straight up the ferry stairs to the café for a yummy hot chocolate. Arriving in Molde we parked the car and enjoyed a walk around the city centre. Molde is known as the city of ... read more

After 8 weeks of amazing adventure covering both hemispheres, 5 countries, and 60,000+ miles, we arrived in our final destination for the summer, Stavanger, Norway. This is the third time Barb and I have spent the summer with our extended family, Jeff & Traci Skinner, but the first visit for Lisa and Larry. Stavanger is the "oil capitol" of Norway which is what brought the Skinners here nearly 4 years ago to work in the industry. Now that we'd been in the country almost a week, we'd finally adjusted to the cost of things here. Basically most everything is nearly twice the cost of comparable goods and services in the U.S. Norway is a model example of what happens when you mix a vibrant economy with a Socialistic government. Since our last visit in 2013 the ... read more

Hi everyone This is the 2nd last day of the cruise and we are sitting in the Lyric Theatre listening to the Captain’s talk about maritime issues. The first question is about the weather…surprise, surprise! So going back a couple of days. We’ve been in Norway for 5 days now and it’s a BEAUTIFUL country. It’s been incredibly warm and sunny, only raining on one day. That was the day we hiked to the Briksdal Glacier which is a part of the Jostedal glacier ice-field, the largest glacier on the European mainland. The glacier slope plunges from a height of 1200metres, down to the lush, narrow Briksdal Valley. At its thickest part the ice is 400m deep! I thought it was going to be a 2 mile walk there and back. Bzz…wrong answer! It was an 8.6km ... read more
