Besseggen: Norway’s best hike and “the most famous hike in Scandinavia” according to visitnorway.com, who may be slightly biased. Surprising then that I’d never heard of it. Because as well as getting around the world to wander among some very pretty places, I’m perhaps even better at reading about hikes that I would like to do. Especially while at work if I need a five-minute internet distraction – cat videos don’t do much for me. After a month working in the furnace that is the Kuwaiti desert, I needed a little holiday, and I could think of nowhere that was a greater contrast to Kuwait than Norway (August is the wrong month for Antarctica). I would be swapping plus 50C temperatures and monotonous sun for a mild 20C with a chance of glorious drizzle; flat featureless ... read more

0628 – zaterdag – Heidal (N)– Jotunheimen Feriesenter (540 km) Lange rit naar Noorwegen. Gans anders dan Finland en Zweden. Ruwer, hoger, bergen, watervallen. Iets voo... read more

We are addicted! No other way to explain the need to go back to that mountain pass and experience it on a nice clear sunny day. Our plan was to back track thru route 55, and then go to the Geirangerfjord (which is included on UNESCO's World Heritage List) drive to the Trollstigen (English: Trolls' Path)which is a snake like mountain road with its steep incline of 9% and eleven hairbends down a steep mountainside ( we never learn) and then try to get to the city of Molde in time for a jazz concert and then finish at our out of the way storjford hotel and make it for shabbat by 10 at night.. So the download is this .... we drove for about nine hours. Half of those hours I was in a state ... read more

Saturday 6th September Is a Norwegian hangover any worse than a London one? Well frankly when you get the bar bill - yes. At an eye watering £7/pint (well actually less than a pint - 0.4l) getting drunk here was never going to be cheap - and it wasn't. So this morning I have a sore head and an empty wallet. I don't get many hangovers these days, so maybe it is the altitude (about 5000ft), but I feel cack. The driving limit over here is 0.02mg/l which is ¼ of the UK limit. As I finished drinking about 2 am last night (this morning) this is the reason I am lagging behind this morning and updating yesterday's blog. I never made it to Gerainger yesterday. Went for a stunning 4 hour hike in the Jotunheim ... read more

Friday 5th September What an absolutely superb day - clearly illustrating the benefits of loose planning, which to be frank is all I am capable of. Still today it paid off in droves. Started my morning ritual of unpacking fetid newspaper stuffed tight into my boots to try and dry them overnight - lovely. Had brekky and then scooted back up “the road” to try and take some pics before the ferry and as is often the way with mega scenery couldn't do it justice - but maybe you can at least see from the picture how steep the cliffs were, I couldn't even capture them fully on wide angle. The road is mega - both from a scenery and rideability perspective. Some of the magic of yesterday had been lost though, as the clouds lacing ... read more

... read more
