Our hotel in Oslo was actually in an older part of the main train station so it wasn't a struggle to get up at 6am to board the train to Myrdal which is at the peak of the mountain range that divides west and east Norway (or north/south depending on your perspective). This station is where you transfer to the Flamsbana, a historic smaller train that winds its way down the Sognefjord to Flam. Again, the unseasonable weather was dogging us and even before we reached Myrdal we encountered snow and near blizzard conditions! We were repeating the route Barb and I had done in 2012, but about 6 weeks earlier so there was a LOT more snow on the ground. In many places it still had the buildings buried to their roofs. Once we boarded ... read more

462km seperate the cities Bergen and Oslo, a train ride that should take roughly 7 hours to complete. Yesterday, I found out the hard way that that is sometimes not the case as a traveller on a budget with no real solid plans! Let's start in the morning, shall we? Shawn, who has now become my travel companion for the next few days, and I woke up around 6:30 to grab some quick breakfast before catching the bus to the train station. We checked out, grabbed our backpacks and stepped out the door to see the bus driving by. Happy Easter, everyone by the way! But the Easter bunny made it hard for us this morning, altering the schedule for the bus so that it comes around again in an hour! Walking to the station it ... read more

After a buffet breakfast that included Swedish pancakes we boarded our coach at precisely 7:55. This was to be a travel day and oh what a day. This was also tunnel day as we would travel through several tunnels through the mountains, one as long as 16 miles. We arrived in Gudvangen where we boarded our first ferry for a 10 minute ride and then drove to a quaint little town of Laerdal. We took a short 10 minute walk through this charming town and met our driver, Jan, at the other end. We had to be at our next ferry terminal at 10:30 so with just enough time to spare we were on our way. We were the first in line so we booked it up to the top deck. Once again, we were told ... read more

On Sunday, we continued our journey to return to Bergen from Balestrand. To do this, we jumped back on the fast-ferry, which continued to Flam. Although we no longer had primo seats, it was still the best part of that day's journey, with the amazing views constantly changing as we travelled up the fjord towards Flam, and a few stops for beautiful waterfalls. The sides of the fjords had small buildings, farms, built high above the fjord and accessible only by boat. Sometimes we'd see a road travelling alongside the fjord. The sun was shining, the skies were blue with fluffy clouds, and it wasn't too cold. I noted that everyone we met travelling in Balestrand was quite amiable. We had many conversations wherever we went with other people, possibly because there were so few of ... read more

Bergen to Flam 11 June 2014 After visiting the stave church just outside of Bergen, we left the city while it was raining and headed for Voss. This town has the largest winter resort in Western Norway. It has chair lifts, ski lifts, and a cable car. We felt a distinct chill in the air, something we have not experienced until today. We saw the Voss Kirke, a 1270 Gothic-style church with fine interior. We walked down the main street and then to the Museum where there was a panoramic view on the area. We saw many traditional farmhouses surrounding the town. We then headed north to Vinje and onto Stalheim. Here was the very interesting Stalheim Hotel where there were considerable antique furniture and beautiful art. The additional feature of this Hotel was the magnificent ... read more

Flamsbana - The Flam Railway to Myrdal 12 June As soon as we exited one of the many tunnels we had driven through on 11 June, we found that Flam was highly organised for tourists. There are 460 'permanent' residents in the Town and 100s of tourists. We were astounded when we were parking our motor home to see in front of us, a massive cruise ship. It had cruised right to the end of Sognefjorden (Aurlandsfjorden is the arm of the Sognefjorden, where Flam is). On walking around the area, we saw the museum, train station, tourist office, bank, restaurants and several hotels. A train had just pulled into the station and 100s of people filed off, mostly getting onto the cruise ship. It was nearly 7.00pm and the ship's horn blew and 10 minutes ... read more

Ok! I'm tired of driving, exhausted and missing a good cup of coffee. We feel like we've been traveling for weeks and it's only been 8 days..yesterday I just really wanted to hang but we really felt we had to go to Voss and Flam after all the hype we had read and heard. So after lying in the sun at 9 o'clock in the evening (i even got a little tan) we got onto the web to find out what there was to do. Jeff really really wanted to hike and luckily one of the first sites that we hit was Flam hiking. So early in the morning we took the longer route out of Mo - that's what they call this place around here, for a 3 hour drive to Flam. I felt a ... read more

31st May 2013 – 7thJune 2013 This is not our usual sort of trip and as it’s all organised I’m not sure there will be too much to write about but we are off on a P & O Cruise to Norway on Oceana for 7 nights! It’s our first trip away for quite a while and I’m quite excited, and just thankful to be able to get away at long last! We haven’t ever been on a cruise before and have never been to Norway – so a couple of ‘firsts’! Ok..............I’m quite impressed!! The journey down to Southampton was fine, finding Terminal 4, no problem, check in was amazingly efficient – you drive in, unload your luggage, a guy appears and takes your luggage away and then you just drive your car into one ... read more
