Historic Buildings
The whole street has been preserved. According to Trude, the post office lady and a sign in the Info Centre, 30km from Flaam, by bus,
in Laerdal, there is a shop for the hobbyist.
I am off to Laerdal. Pay my senior fare of 41NOK, and take a seat in the front ready for more spectacular scenery. And then we enter a tunnel. And then a second one. Of the 30km to Laerdal almost 27km are inside a tunnel. The one tunnel is 24.5 km long, the longest car tunnel, in the world.
From the bus stop can be seen the wool shop and more importantly a KIWI Mini Price grocery store. I need fruit as much as I need wool and even more urgently I need a toilet.
All needs are met.
The avocado is cheaper, there are grapes, tomatoes, sardines, chocolate chip cookies, and mayonnaise! Was very tempted to write down prices and take pictures but had already once in Buenos Aires been suspected of being a grocery spy when I took pictures of the aisles of food.
After paying 80 NOK for some stamps for postcards going to loved ones and those without internet, lI was in the wool

The wood is original dating back hundreds of years. The electric plug is a recent addition. shop. Found some good colours for mittens and a hat and a double ball to keep me busy knitting gloves. These primary needs satisfied I was free to wander the town.
Found my way, by instinct I think, towards the historical part of the village. Laerdal is situated at the end of a fjord that served as a dropping of point for goods required in times past. The old wooden storehouse still stand at the waterfront. Benches have been placed so that passersby can relax. I used one of thew benches to have my lunch.
I was very relaxed until I panicked about the time of the returning bus. I was sure it was 5:05 but then I thought maybe i read 15:05. The next bus was at 20:20.
Shoved that cuke and that cheese on a Wasa cracker in my bag and took off for the bus stop.
Found the schedule. Panic subsides. It was 17:05 which is 5:05. After missing the train I was not taking any chances.
Finished my lunch at the bus stop. Walked in the opposite direction to have a look at how people lived.
Small lanes led past
the colourful houses. Balconies, decks, cement block barbeque pits, white fences, campers and cars surround the dwellings. Very nice. Very close together.
It hit me! Since the town exists because the river piled up alluvial soil, there is not too much extra territory to be had so the lots are small.
The historical buildings in the older part of the village have been restored and are kept up by the residence. The outside of the buildings are original and the insides have been changed to accommodate whatever enterprise is undertaken there. I saw a music shop, a hairdresser, an antique shop and a designer clothing shop. Its a lovely little town. Worth a visit. There were others with cameras wandering about.
The bus came right on time, I paid again but only 39nok this time ... different bus company ...hope I get that one wen its time to go to Bergen.
I had a great day. Was as cold as a cucumber. Took a hot shower and promptly fell asleep. Did not eat my sardines till 21:00. And then I started to knit.
Am listening to Norsky radio. Songs in English. News in Norwegian. But
Fences
All houses were surrounded by knee high wooden fences. it does not matter what language is spoken ... I HEARD OBAMA WON THE PEACE PRIZE!!!!!! Halleluiah!
Even got a whiff of the controversy ...until I hear it all in English I reserve comment ... but you've gotta love the guy! ....right away sharing the prize with those that are part of the CHANGE. For now....once again Halleluiah! and Amen!
