Friday What a change in the weather today, cold wet with low cloud! We pottered about in Dream Catcher catching up on a few little jobs and then set off to explore the rest of the island. There isn't any point in walking any trails as all the hikes climb up into the low cloud as Vaeroy is mostly a mountain with three small villages in grassy bays.We explored a couple of tracks leading to the sea and found a place where we could watch some of the local birds, there are pairs of eider ducks paddling around, it's always seems unfair with ducks that the males have such beautiful feathers and the females are so drab. There's a black guillemot, the first we've seen, it's smaller than I expected! Through the spotting scope Les found ... read more

Alta, the apex of our trip. After this port we turn around and head back South so it was now or never. I’ll cut straight to the chase…we saw them!! The Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights. For those of you who don’t know or who think they know but aren’t too sure, here is the science bit: The Northern Lights, or to give them their scientific name, aurora borealis form when charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare penetrate the earth's magnetic shield and collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere. These collisions result in countless little bursts of light, called photons, which make up the aurora. Collisions with oxygen produce red and green auroras, nitrogen produces the pink and purple colours whilst helium produces an orange hew. With ... read more

Well after one day at sea arrived in Tromso 8am after passing through the Artic Circle and boy is it cold! Quite a bit of cloud so didn't know how we would go searching for Northern Lights tonight that wasn't until 7.00pm pick up, so caught the FREE SHUTTLE BUS (about the only thing on this cruise that has been for free) to town and had a good look around, very pretty town but lots of snow and you have to look out for the grey ice everywhere, makes for slipping dangerous, we have our ice spikes to clip onto our shoes so that is handy. Temperature here today if -1 so cold but I think the worst is to come further up. Life goes on in these frozen towns and they drive like the roads ... read more

Alta 16th/17th November We came, we saw and we were MESMERISED Well, the time has come the walrus said - will we see the lights yes or no!!! First a bit about Alta, and the county of Finnmark. We arrive in Alta today Thursday the 16th, at about 1pm - 30 mins before sunset. We have sailed from Tromso overnight having set sail at 4am, sailing through the Fjords around to Alta. We spotted a few Orcas early on but sadly no humpbacks!! Apparently there some but only feeding. Alta is situated at the head of Altafjord and its main modern claim to fame is where the battleship Tirpitz and other German cruisers laid up in wait for allied shipping. Following Germany's invasion of Norway in 1940 there were as many as 15000 troops based in ... read more

Hammerfest to Lofoten Islands 31 July, 1 & 2 August I cannot believe it is our 80th day away since we left for Darwin for the Kimberley Cruise in NW Australia. After leaving Hammerfest we drove 150 kms to Alta. We were looking forward to driving through the Lofoten & Vesteralen Islands but before we did, we drove through some more of Norway's magnificent scenery. We have noticed extensive new or resealed roads everywhere. The oil & gas money they are receiving is certainly going into infrastructure of the country. And Norwegians HAVE to be the best tunnel builders in the world, even better than the Swiz and Austrians, just by pure numbers that they have built. We drove through many tunnels which shortened our journey considerably, even though there is still, big kilometers to do, ... read more
