Giethoorn is a beautiful village in northeastern Holland. It is known for it boat-filled waterways, footpaths, bicycle trails and centuries-old thatched-roof houses. It is a car-free village and hence the best way to reach there is by Public transport. If you are looking for visiting 10 attractions in a day- this is not the trip for you. However, if you are lookin got a romantic trip or a leisure trip where you can rent a boat, stroll around, eat, click photos and enjoy an absolutely breathtaking place – this is the perfect day trip for you. Giethoorn is roughly 121 kms from Amsterdam and can definitely be a day trip choice, if you do not wish to stay overnight. If you have never heard of this place or want to know how beautiful it is, check out this video -

One can easily reach Giethoorn by Public transport (train and then a bus) or can drive all the way. From Amsterdam Zuid/Centraal station, take a train to Steenwijk. There are direct trains but if you find a connecting train via Zwolle, 1just get on that train. It can take around 1,5 hrs.Once you reach Steenwijk, get
out of the train station and walk to the bus station next to it.Take the bus no. 70 & get down at Giethoorn village bus stop. This journey from Steenwijk to Giethoorn will take about 30 minutes and one way bus ticket will costs €4. That can be bought at the bus from the driver. Keep some cash handy.
Things to do in Giethoorn •
Rent a Boat and enjoy a fun boat-ride There are quite a few interesting things, but my favourite and a must-do thing is boating around Giethoorn. It is also the best way to explore the village. There are boats available for renting right when you enter the village. Not only can you rent a boat, you can drive the boat yourself . Of course, you will get instructions for driving the boat and also a map(1 hour or 2 hour route). We rented a boat for 7 people and paid €35 (for 7 people) for 1 hour. Maps are free and you need to return it to them after the ride.

Walk Around Giethoorn As much fun boating around is, it may not be something
you would like to do more than an hour or two. But then, not to forget, this beautiful village has absolutely gorgeous walkways as well. This picturesque village is perfect for beautiful pictures. Visit Museum in Giethoorn There are a few museums in Giethoorn, but the one I liked the most is Museum Giethoorn ‘t Olde Maat Uus. This little museum is right on the walking path along the canal. It shows the history of how people lived in the area. It is not big and doesn’t take much time.

Eat in Giethoorn Food in Giethoorn is superb. If possible, I recommend that you eat at least one meal there in the village . There are so many restaurants & quaint cafes in Giethoorn to choose from – Italian, American , Dutch & Asian cuisines are available. I would suggest to eat at one of the eateries by the walkways with beautiful views of the
village.
Travel TipsThe train ticket can be around €2 to 25, one way per person. So if you are a group of 4-7 people, buy the group ticket from NS website which costs €8 per person one way. You need to download NS app(which is free). The main ticket holder must be travelling with the group and everyone should have an valid Id proof (to be on the safer side). Also, should be travelling during off peak hours. For more details , check out NS website –
https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/meest-gekocht/p/groepsticket-dalurenDO NOT fall for any package (bus and boat) trap in Giethoorn. Please make sure that you start your journey a little early (although off peak hours) as it takes roughly 2 hours from Amsterdam to reach the village. Trust me, you would definitely like to spend as much time as possible once you go there. So, if you go late, you may regret Overall Giethoorn, also called the Venice of Holland, is definitely worth the comparison. However, personally, I feel, it is cleaner and well maintained than Venice and also less crowded. I would highly recommend to rent a boat as it is not so often that you get
to drive a boat. Also, do not think too much about hitting other boats or that you have never driven a boat before (most people there have not either). So, it is ok to make small mistakes and hit a boat once .
