Arriving in Amsterdam
Waiting for the hotel shuttle Wednesday - Travel Day. Watching people is always fun, and today was no exception. We were having lunch in O'Hare and noticed a young man in an Olympic jacket. At first, we thought he had probably just purchased it; but then we noticed the Team USA backpack and duffel bag. No gloves visible though. We spent the next 30 minutes surreptitiously listening to his conversation - what we could hear - and trying to guess what his sport was. We thought hockey? Skeleton? Ski jumping? but hated to leap across three tables and start questioning him. We pulled up the Team USA website and tried to match the pictures to the face ... Turned out to be way harder that we expected. Then he left, and we were left with a mystery and you know how I hate to not know these things. So off we started in the direction he'd had turned, and Dave spotted him. This time, we just went up and straight out asked him ... And turns out he was an Olympian, and was the one we had thought possible based on his picture. Casey Larson, Nordic ski jumper. It had been his first Olympics, and he
Partly Cloudy
Hoping for more sunshine tomorrow was aiming for the next one as well. It had been an awesome experience. He and his dad were off to ski as Whistler. So then we read his bio, he had been one of the last to make the Olympic team. The team finished 9th, he finished 39th on the normal hill and 53d on the large hill. And then, at the end of the bio, we learned that he enjoys long walks, reading and collecting socks .... If only we had known that when we were talking to him :-)) we could have had some fun. So exciting to meet him and talk with him.
Thursday. We have arrived ... And eventually so did our luggage. It was looking bleak on the second piece of luggage - thankfully Dave's bag - arriving today, but magic of persistence at Delta finally located the bag and we were off to our hotel. I did manage to give the shuttle driver the impression that we were staying at the Marriott downtown, instead of the Courtyard by the airport, so we got a bonus tour of the city on our way to a much needed nap. We did see
Talking with the Aussies
Three very long flights in 2 days to get them to Amsterdam. some things that we will do tomorrow ... The oh so tourist hop on hop off canal boat tour, renting a bike and exploring the very narrow city center streets and neighborhoods, and taking a ferry and riding out into the countryside. Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny like today and not rainy like the last two weeks. We talked with an Australian couple who was leaving on a 14 day River and tulip cruise, and they were afraid the tulips were late blooming this year because of the cool weather. Our planned tulip bike and barge tour starts 17 April, so hopefully the weather and tulips will cooperate for us.
