I departed from the Rembrandt Hotel and walked to the nearby De Valk windmill Museum. I paid the four Euro entry fee and entered this great windmill; as impressive as the windmills I seen in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The bottom floor was the living quarters for the operators of the windmill. There was many artifacts there from those living there long ago. The next three floors had many old windmill artifacts made of wood and stone. I think it was the fourth floor where I saw the shoot where the flour was received and bagged up for sale, from the above grinding of grain with heavy mill stones powered by the wind. I was most impressed with the fifth level with its large outside platform with its great 360 degree view of Leiden. I enjoyed this ... read more

I made a brief stop at my hotel, and I was off walking again. (It was so nice to visit cities that are not over-run with slums.) With no specific destination I was just walking to to explore this charming city. I made a walk by many fine old buildings, canals, and the Leiden port. From there I could see a nice windmill in the distance and walked in that direction. I walked through the City West Gate, and continued walking toward the windmill. I arrived at the Molen De Put. I was happy to see that this interesting windmill was open to the public with no entry fee. I walked up the narrow outside stairs and saw the wooden gears that transferred the energy of the windmill wings to the grinding stone. I also got ... read more

A nice Dutch lady was a TB friend, and she met me outside the Rembrandt Hotel to guide me on a walking tour of beautiful Leiden. (Dutch hospitality is alive and well in Leiden.) We walked by what she told me was an old jail-prison. We walked through Leiden and arrived at the impressive Pieterskerk. (Somehow I lost my pics of the inside of this fine old church.) According to Wikipedia construction of this large structure started in 1390 AD and continued for about 180 years. This church had much bad luck including on March 1512 the 110 meter high Westtoren (West Tower) collapsed and was never rebuilt. In about 1566 the Beeldenstorm (fanatical religious nut-jobs that vandalized church stained glass windows, paintings and statues throughout Western Europe) damaged much in this fine old church. Later ... read more

I walked by the Leiden South Gate with my TB friend guide. We arrived at De Burcht, that was elevated by about ten meters. First we crossed the gate on the large iron fence surrounding the fort. We walked up the hill and made a stop for a photo break at the main fort gate. We entered this very old fort and walked up the steps to the top for a good view. According to Wikipedia De Burcht van Leiden (Fort of Leiden) was first built in 1066 AD. Later the fort was raised about ten meters for defense and flood control. In the early 1200s the fort was rebuilt with the current brick wall. This fort withstood military sieges in 1203, 1420, and 1571. In 1651 they built a water tower there with pipes leading ... read more

Leiden, NL We've traveled a bit since our last blog. Our stay (2nights) in Boven-Leeuwen was super nice. Christa & Mark ran a great campground and the last night we were able to use their grill to cook steak, used their micowave for baked potatoes and had a salad. I wish that we could have all those amenities at each campground! Upon leaving, Christa gave us a small jar of homemade strawberry jam. Best campground this trip. The next campground faded by comparison. On the way there we met a gal from the states who had been living in Europe since the 90's. She had lived in France, Germany and the Netherlands. She was telling us it costs about $2000 to get a drivers license in NL. She is teaching school here. You never know who ... read more

Tuesday If you ever have the opportunity to travel in Holland, make sure your trip includes going to the dunes. It is a national park along the coast of the North Sea where you can cycle, walk, hike on trails, or just enjoy the sites. We rode about 25 kilometers through the park before turning back inland to Leiden. It was the only time this week we have been able to spread out and really ride at our own pace without fear of getting lost. We rode through rolling hills with sand dunes that reminded me of the dunes along Lake Michigan. At the end of our ride we stopped at Benny's Beach Inn for refreshments and to dip toes in the sea. Before heading to the dunes we visited the last Royal Delft factory and ... read more

It’s been almost five years since I stepped out of North America and moved to China. With every destination I attempt to recruit visitors from home, partially for the company and familiarly of friends and family, and partially in my selfish attempt to pull people out of their comfort zone and experience something unknown. I say it’s a selfish attempt because for me personally travel has taught me an intangible amount about myself, others and the ways of this world. More than anything I thrive on learning – in any form that may take. I love having visitors because it’s a way to give them a tangible example of why I love experiencing life as an expat, and an opportunity to see how travel can be an amazing teacher and to learn from it. On a ... read more

Our school has campuses all over the world. After spending two semesters at the Bangkok campus we decided it was a good opportunity to visit another campus. So over Christmas and New Year’s, while in Seattle, we packed away our Bangkok clothes and repacked our bags with wool socks, sweaters and down jackets and set off for Europe - my first time in Europe. Iceland far exceeded our expectations. Everything about it was wonderful, beautiful and enjoyable. Then it was time to settle in for school in the Netherlands. That process was less wonderful, beautiful and enjoyable. Home until May is now Leiden, a town 40 km from Amsterdam in South Holland, or Zuid Holland if you want to learn some Dutch. It’s also the birthplace of Rembrandt and home to the pilgrims who came to ... read more

Writing to say my due date is approaching this next Tuedsay. For those of you who may not know already... Avalon and Rhys are going to have a new sibling very soon! Rhys has recently turned two and started, two mornings a week, at nursery/play school which he seems to like a lot. Avalon is at school full time (they begin at age four here) , attends dance class which she really enjoys and keeps asking for swimming lessons which are essential for life in the Netherlands. Overall, life is good, Sean is working a lot and my belly is getting bigger by the moment. Will post photos soon Much love and happiness to all Please send me a note if you have the time: it is always great hearing from our family of friends and ... read more
