Monarch Empress sailed overnight from Medemblik to Zaandam. To do so required sailing along the Markemeer coast, through Amsterdam southbound and then following the Zikanal up to Zaandam. There was no opportunity this time to see a bit of Zaandam as we had at Dordrecht. At Zaandam, we boarded coaches to take us to the Keukenhof Gardens at Lisse. Along the way, the local guide gave us the history of the Dutch tulip trade. In the seventeenth century, tulips came from Ottoman Turkey and soon became extremely fashionable. Prices soared to ten times the annual income of a skilled craftsman. This led to market speculation and the Tulip Bubble that burst in 1637. Nevertheless, the tulip found a home in the sandy soil of South Holland and thrived. Today, they form 20 percent of the Netherlands’ ... read more

Tulips may not have originated in Holland, but that hasn’t stopped them from becoming one of Holland’s main exports and one of the things it’s most well-known for. It was in the 16th century that tulips were imported to Holland from the Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey). Just a few years after arriving in Holland, tulips became the most sought-after commodity in the entire Netherlands, after Carolus Clusius wrote what’s considered the first major book about the flower. At the time, tulip bulbs were worth more than gold and were sold for 10 times what a commoner made in a year. Needless to say, the time period was appropriately named “tulip mania.” Though they certainly don’t outweigh gold anymore, the Netherlands is still one of the largest exporters of tulips in the world. Today, roughly 60% of ... read more

Geo: 52.2681, 4.54507 To begin the month of April we went to Annemieke's Pluktuin, a tulip farm. Everyone was invited to pick 10 tulips from their fields, to take back with us to brighten up our cabins in the ship. So much beauty in our arms! I picked ones that were either still closed, or barely opened, thinking that in ten days' time they would all blossom (which they did). I tried to pick pink tulips and purple ones, but also got a yellow, an orange, and a red tulip to take back with me. Finding vases to hold these gorgeous, hopeful flowers was a trick; I used our ice bucket, which served quite well. And after visiting the tulip farm we went to Keukenhof, the 79 acre flower park that was once the kitchen garden ... read more

My wedding sucked. Not my marriage. I’m referring to my wedding party. I think mine is one of the worst ever. My dress wasn’t pretty. I didn’t even know what my hand bouquet looks like until the morning of the wedding. The décor was very plain. The venue management didn’t allow any music to be played (it’s complicated – but basically, no music at all). The 500 guests are mostly our parent’s colleagues (including my husband’s creepy uncle who for some reason gave me this sexy black see through lingerie with feathers – which I never wore). I didn’t even get to choose the menu or party favors (my mum overruled those). And the worst part is – I didn’t have any great wedding pictures. If you follow this blog; you would notice how I love ... read more

I'm sure it goes without saying... but I love the Dutch!! The city is a lot different than what I've seen in Spain and France. More mellow and modern but still full of life. The people here are very friendly and offer good directions to confused travelers. There are so many bridges and canals here, it can be difficult to navigate. So far I've tried a white beer called Witte which is delicious and a croquette sandwhich. The sandwhich comes on a bun and the croquette it battered and deep fried with gravy like insides. Day 2 in the Netherlands we traveled to Keukenhof Gardens for their tulip festiva. Their grounds include hectares of land with millions of flowers. The flowers smelled unbelievable and were so pretty. They had a classic windmill which Teresa and I ... read more

Enkele weken later werd Dick v/d S. geintroduceerd ... read more

Today we took a train and then a bus to Keukenhof Gardens. The flower fields weren't looking too promising on the way there, so we were worried that the long winter had delayed the blossoming of the tulips. The gardens weren't at full bloom, but it was still awesome. As we walked through the park, we discovered a grassy area that had these giant bean bag chairs strewn about for lounging (apparently called Fat Boys... no offense to anyone who may be reading this blog). We each collapsed in a chair for a couple minutes before moving on to explore the windmill. We climbed to the top (more stairs) for a good view of the gardens. From close up, you can really feel the power of those huge arms! After lunch, we strolled through the indoor ... read more
