This is a very ambitious trip. 15 countries, 16 flights + a cruise and many, many opportunities for plans to go awry. Al fresco warning

We ate at a lovely seafood restaurant by the dock but were spared Critter Attacks.

Baboons!

All along the highways, just before picnic pullovers there are baboon warnings. If a baboon wants your lunch you don’t argue. They will even open the car door and get right in to steal food.

Nederburg Winery, Paarl

First stop on our trek through wine country just north of Cape Town. A great selection of quality wines.

Great lunch platter.

Paired with a beautiful chenin blanc.

Fairview Winery, Paarl

Home of “Goats Do Roam” (and other better) wines. This looks to be the Alpha Billy.

Afrikaans Language Monument, Paarl

First language monument we have seen.

Boschendal, Franschhoek

The beautiful setting for the second oldest winery in South Africa.....established in the mid 1600s.

And a clever way to transform a blank wall.

Lekkerwijn Historic Guest House

Another fortunate choice! Built in 1689 it retains most of it’s original furniture and class. Rudyard Kipling and Cecil Rhodes have stayed here. Fortunately the plumbing has been updated,...likely in the 1800s! Walls are 2’ thick (to insulate) and the roof is thatch.

1. Marlene inspects a high chair with built in potty. The legs also fold out to convert it into a rocking chair. 2. Front door latch. 3 Original tap & hand-basins in our room. (We also had a newer shower.)

All aboard the Whistle Train!

Son Pat warned us that if we took this train we’d get whistled! There are 8 routes on the hop on, off tram & buses that deliver you to many of the Franschhoek wineries. It made for a great day for both of us with no driver needed and wonderful wines to sample.

Boschendal Friday night

Our last evening spent here enjoying the live music, local food stalls and crafts. On to Hermanus tomorrow.
