This was my last day in Utrecht and I wanted to see the nearby City of Amersfoort. From my B&B hotel I had a short walk to the bus stop to Utrecht Central, and took a bus to Amersfoort station. (This country lad was impressed with the Dutch mass transportation system.) In front of the Amersfoort Station I asked a local about how to find Sint-Joriskerk. He pointed at the chrome marker on the ground, and told me to follow the chrome markers. Shore nuff, the markers took me to Sint-Joriskerk after a walk through this very nice small city. Inside the church I wanted to walk up the narrow steps to the tower for the view; but I did not have the energy to walk up. This is a very nice old church that pre-dates ... read more

Prologue A mission to follow the 54th parallel was the original idea behind this trip. I've lived either side of this line and when I thought about it there are a lot of interesting places along this line, so I decided that I would start to travel along it, find out about some of the places on the route. To get things at home in perspective I thought I would start in Germany, and we would go by bike from the North Sea following the 54th parallel eastwards for about a week. But Kasia broke her wrist this summer and it was not to be. So instead, with the holiday apartment booked and paid for on the island of Rügen, we made our way over by train without the bikes. So this isn't really a travelogue ... read more

Look left, look right and don’t get hit by a bike! Bikes are everywhere in the Netherlands and I got to see what happens when people leave their bike at the train station for too long.. the bike police cut the lock, bike gets loaded onto a truck and if you want it back, you have to pay and pick it up from somewhere! I think bike fines far outweigh car fines in this bike-crazy country! At 81 years fit, Opa (mum’s dad) still rides his bike from Blacktown to Box Hill – a lot further than I would attempt! You might be able to take a Dutchman out of his country, but you can’t take a Dutchman off his bike! I hope you got the chance to read my last blog ‘Making Memories in the ... read more

I appreciate that not everyone has the chance to dig up their family tree roots, meet distant relatives and re-live childhood memories, so I was very blessed to have the opportunity to do so. Both of my grandparents (from my mum and dads side) were born and grew up in the Netherlands. They immigrated to Australia in the mid 1950’s leaving behind family, friends and jobs to discover a new life in the land down under. Along came my parents and you know what comes next.. me! A Dutch dish here and there, the oddly spoken word, calling my grandparents Opa and Oma and how could I forget dressing up as a little Dutch girl when I was 7 for International Day at school, has been the extent of my Dutch heritage in Australia. I had ... read more

Well, the game just ended. You all know how it went...I won't dwell. Today we rode to the Austerlitz Pyramid just outside of town. This was pretty cool to see although halfway up the stairs I remembered about my fear of heights....How do I keep forgetting? It always seems like such a good idea and then I look down. They also had a pretty cool kids playpark! Then we hopped back on the bikes and headed to a little lake close by that had a lovely beach and nice warm water. We ended up completing a mini mini triathalon cuz in the middle of swimming (the swim leg), thunder clouds rolled in and everyone made a mad run for their bikes (picture 100+ people in a bike traffic jam) (this was the run leg - a ... read more

The last few weeks I've been trying to get everything ready for my SEA trip for 6 months. There's actually a lot to think about.. passport, visa, vaccinations, medication etc. Getting a new passport was more difficult then I thought. Because I'm not registered in Holland anymore I had to go all the way to The Hague (1h20m away) to apply for a new passport. I wasn't too pleased about this, but there wasn't much I could do about it. So I went down there with a passport photo and my old passport (this should normally be sufficient) but no... Where is the proof that I'd been living abroad for the past 3,5 years? Well, seeing that I had nothing with me (payslips, work permits etc. were in a box in Switzerland) they had to do ... read more

The bike touring lifestyle has been a blast so far... You are always living in the moment: Where to get the next meal (or three), where to sleep, where to relieve yourself. Its very refreshing. We spent so long looking forward to this trip and living in the future but now we are in the moment. You always have a perspective of the entire country when you visit a little town: When you roll into another rediculously cute town, many of the tourists there (if there are any this time of year) have arrived by car or train. But we have had the priveledge of seeing the spaces in between towns, the endless, green fields, the thousands of sheep, and the anticipation of an approaching town as a city hall tower grows larger and larger in ... read more
