Dorine said it was impossible to eat a Bosschebol without a knife and fork. Frank, being Frank, took that on as a challenge. I declined to enter the competition, however he assures me they are delicious and that using your fingers is definitely an option, just not a particularly attractive one to watch! Bosschebollen are famous in Den Bosch and it can be tricky to know which bakery sells the best ones if you don't have a native with you. Luckily, we had two, and Dorine and Fred led us to the perfect place to sample one. A bossche bol is a pastry similar to an eclair, full of whipped cream and covered in chocolate. Frank highly recommends them. I think it's something you probably try once. Den Bosch is only about 20 minutes from Eindhoven ... read more

This morning I took the double decker train to Den Bosch. It cost me 20 euros for a return with my bike on the train as well! I went to meet Matt from NUCA to see how his Eramsus experience is going so far. So we arranged to meet at the golden eagle, which was infact a golden dragon! It was jokes seeing Matt get on a bike after he said he hadn't cycled since he was 10 years old! He did really well and we cycled into the town centre towards the busy market. Den Bosch is a beautiful town full of old rickety streets and more typical Dutch buildings. We bought stroopwafel en eierkoek! After seeing his accomodation, Matt showed me his campus where he studies. It looks like a warehouse but then there's ... read more

Saturday 18 April, 2009 I take dad and Liz to ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The main attraction here, as I’m told by Miep - is the Binnendieze boat touring - which is the only place in the Netherlands which you can do boat touring under canals. That’s right people we went under the city, sailing over age old waterway, cruising past old buildings with their remarkable “twin gables”. The area of ‘s-Hertongenbosch is about 1 and a half hours south by train from Amsterdam. The area was populated around 1150. A fortification was built around the wall in 1185 to protect the city from enemy attacks. In the 14th century the second city wall was built and meant that the river branches were now in closed in the city centre. The little waterways were called the Binnendieze. Me and ... read more

So I've only been here for 3 days and it feels like I've been here for a month. We have to bike to class. That sounds great, but school is over 4 miles away. Every morning we get up at 7, get ready, eat breakfast, and bike 4 miles. It's flat here so it wouldn't be much of a problem, but the bicycle seats are unbelievably bad. My butt hurts so bad that I think there should be visible bruising. It even hurts to sit in a chair. I think that I need one of those inflatable donuts. Hmm...maybe my neck pillow from the plane will work? Besides the awful pain of the bicycle seat, we get lost every morning on the way to class. In fairness, we've only biked to class twice, but we've taken ... read more

Last night was interesting at the Hotel Flipper but we mostly slept. We slept until around 5am and then we couldn't sleep anymore. We got up and showered and went out to breakfast. The room was small and there were only about 5 tables, but there still managed to be 3-4 languages going on. The hotel owners speak Chinese, we speak English, and there were French people behind us. They had a little girl who was about 3 and was yelling in French. Adorable. We decided to stuff ourselves because finding food that is cheap is kinda hard. We took a tram to Centraal Station and then tried to find a train to the airport. A train pulled up and we didn't know if it was the right one so I asked people who were getting ... read more

Masters of Hardcore has been labelled by some as the mainstream event of hardcore. To some, it's like Parklife to the electro scene, the Utopia to Australia's rave scene, Taste of Chaos to the emo scene...you get my drift :). It is the biggest event in the world that plays purely hardcore - selling 20,000 tickets each time so it's understandable people feel this way. Just like all big events, it's made a name for itself for a reason - Masters of Hardcore presents the worlds biggest hardcore artists (mostly Dutch & Italian) and spreads them out over 5 arenas, which all have a different theme, well thought out lighting production, incredible sound quality and stage set ups. The controversy with an event such as this is that people complain it's always the same each time ... read more
