We had heard that there's an excellent market in Floriana on a Sunday, but despite asking several people in the hotel, we were at a loss as to exactly where it is. Most people seemed to think that we were after some local fish market, which, quite rightly, they thought was a bizarre thing for us to be asking about. Eventually one of the receptionists told us that it was at the park-and-ride, about 20 minutes' walk away, so we looked that up on Google Maps and set off to find it. What we didn't know is that the market finished at 11.00am, and we arrived at 11.30am to find everyone in the process of clearing everything away. It was a lot of walking in horrendous heat for no reason (although we did get to see ... read more

It was to be another exciting adventure on the buses today, this time a lot further away, so the two Euros each will be even better value. We were heading for Mdina, which is close to the centre of Malta. After an hour deciphering the Malta bus routes (slight exaggeration) we worked out that any of routes 50, 51, 52, 53 or 56 would get us there and they left from a whole another set of bus stops round the corner from the main area. We went round there and waited for which ever route arrived first. It was a 52. Whilst Valletta itself is quite small and compact, the built-up, urban sprawl that surrounds it is surprisingly large. At a guess I'd say it almost covers a quarter of the island. The only slight downside ... read more

Following my walk around the rim of the fort yesterday (see ), I thought I would get up early again and head back out there to see whether it would make any good photographs. It didn't. I was very disappointed as all the floodlights that illuminate all the walls had been turned off. It was dark and bland. Not only that, but I needed the light on my phone in order to see where I was going. When I could, I climbed some steps back up to the streets and tried out some other locations. I did manage to get a good photograph of the Victoria Gate (stealing the composition from a postcard I had seen) and I also eventually ended up at a location that I had been to a couple of evenings ago (see ... read more

There's still lots left to see in Valletta, but we decided that we would go on a little adventure today and get the boat over to Sliema. We eventually managed to work out where the ferry left from and how to get there, as there was little in the way of signs. There's a road that goes off in the wrong direction, but then loops back through a tunnel under the main road. The boat leaves every 30 minutes on the hour and the half hour, and was bang on time (maybe the influences from nearby Italy are not as strong as we thought they are - see ). We decided to brave the sun and sit on the top deck, where we got some excellent views back towards Valletta. And forward towards Sliema for that ... read more

I did my usual and got up early for the sunrise. I had checked in advance and there doesn’t seem to be an iconic sunrise view in Valleta, so I walked along the east side of the city looking over towards the three cities on the other side of the bay. I couldn't find a good view, which wasn't helped as some of the locations I thought might work were not accessible. I couldn't get one view I had seen of the Siege Bell War Memorial from the Lower Barrakka Gardens as the gardens themselves were closed. I relaxed by the bell to wait for the sunrise, but that was also a disappointment as it was almost totally obscured by the hazy sky. The east side of Valletta seems to be mainly made up of huge ... read more

It's the first day of our holiday, but most of it is actually being spent at home as the flight was not until 4.35 in the afternoon. At least that means that we're not dragging ourselves out of bed at the crack of dawn for a mad dash to the airport with the prospect of rush hour on the M25. We could have a leisurely morning packing (we're very last minute with our packing to put it mildly) and then leave plenty of time to drive to Gatwick without worrying about the inevitable jams. We had booked the valet parking, as it was only marginally more expensive than the long-stay and meant that there was no need to hunt for spaces in a mammoth mass of cars and then wait to catch a bus to the ... read more

Week 3 – Malta (18-25 Mar) We had a heart attack at 4.30am ahead of our airport transfer. Our chalet receptionist kindly offered to drive us from the chalet to the bus station, which is 2km down the road, but when we went to leave the chalet, someone had blocked the boom gate exit by parking illegally and leaving for the night. We were completed blocked! The receptionist got out, looked around the car, tried to see if the owner had left contact details but to no avail. I immediately said “Jesus, help us!”. I then decided to check if the vehicle was unlocked and it was. The receptionist jumped in the driver’s seat and put the stick into neutral. I then pushed the car away from the boom gate, far enough to provide a gap ... read more

Valletta is an impressive city of lovely pale sandstone which has been quarried on the island for centuries. Due to its strategic position in the Med, it has been invaded and taken over many times from the early Phoenicians to Napolean's army. Eventually the Brits chucked the French out at the Maltese request, and it became independent in 1964. They still drive on the left and all speak English, though Maltese is a strange language of Arabic origin. They are of course proud of the fact that King George bestowed the George Cross on the island for the gallantry of the whole population during the 2nd world war. We stayed at the Domus Zamittello which is a lovely family-owned palazzo on the main Republic Street. The taxi driver dropped us off at the main square and ... read more

Well we have arrived in Malta, on descending down the impression wasn't that great reminded me of flying in Cairo Egypt, with the dryness, dust and white washed and cream buildings and on getting in the taxi, chaos!!! There seemed to be so much building and roadworks going on at present we seemed to go around in circles to get into town. We are staying in Gzira in a lovely little boutique hotel and they have a rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking the harbour and their pool is across the road right on the harbour. After walking from Gzira to Valletta I had thoughts of Havana Cuba as we walked the old streets with the house and buildings in disrepair and dusty, dirty streets. Though when we arrived in the Valletta area it seems that a ... read more
