We thought we'd have an easier day with a short bus ride to Valletta & then another bus to the Three Cities. Early start once again rewarded us with seats....we are learning! Well there was some nice big fluffy clouds but they weren't anywhere near the path of the sun! We started off in Senglea which is one of the three Fortified Cities in the Grand Harbour which also sits high above sealevel. Today it was dwarfed by a cruise ship... 4 of which were in the Harbour. Nice quiet stroll down the lovely narrow streets. The Three Cities are protected now from demolition & high rise apartments. We popped into a wee museum & were told the history of Malta & the many who tried to Conquer it: The houses were strategically built that from ... read more

Had a very relaxing morning with domestics & a swim around 11am. Expecting another hot day. We picked up another talinjia card (tar lini ya) for the bus & have a few rides left on it so we thought we'd go back to Birgu in Vittoriosa. They were setting up for an enormous gastronomical & lantern festival, where all the lights will be turned off & the city lit with candles. Food stalls being set up everywhere to try Snails, Rabbit, Horsemeat, Octopus & Swordfish. Huge bakery stalls. Once again we erred on caution & decided to stay away from the crowds & perhaps the food... Heading into the heart of Birgu city we came across 'The Norman House' the oldest house in Birgu built by the Normans in the 13th century ontop of what has ... read more

Whilst considering my blog, I scanned the Wikipedia entry for Hamrun. It makes interesting reading, although I am not sure whether the content goes down that well with the current residents. The content gives two nicknames, by which the good folk are known. The entries describe them alternatively as the "scary ones" or basically a set of handy lads who are always tooled up with a blade. We alighted from the bus on the Main Road and it was gratifying, based on the above information, that all looked calm and normal. We were in town looking for the Victor Tedesco Stadium. On the last trip to Malta, I obviously studied the options for football fixtures. I noted that the Premier League is primarily played out in just 3 grounds – the National Stadium at Ta Qali, ... read more

There is a Store Where The Creatures Meet. A line from a Doors song and a not so well known football fanzine of old ......... Saint Mirren, if you're interested. I am not sure whether fanzines ever took off in Malta, but Hibernians could have done worse than "There is a Bar Where the Flies Meet". It is not far from their ground. We'll come back to that later. The day had started in more select surroundings. The weather forecast must have been on the up and the hotel staff had laid the tables for breakfast on the terrace. Sliema harbour looked picture perfect. The swell of the previous day had subsided. It was flat calm. The boats bobbed gently on the mirror like water. Benefits Britain were once more in evidence and stocked up on ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! So, me and Marcus decided yesterday to go to the two temples at Mgarr, the Skorba and the Ta' Hagrat. As we sat on the bus going there, all of a sudden this huge, gorgeous church came before us and I immediately pulled up my map to see if I could figure out where we were. Turns out we passed through Mosta and that it was the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady. I told Marcus straight away that we'd stop there on the way back and Marcus agreed. When we came to Mgarr we first went to the Mgarr Parish Church to learn about where we could find the temples and a lovely lady told us how to get to the first one. She also told us that there is ... read more

Today we set out in search of history and ended up a little disappointed, although we did have a good day. We headed off to Birgu, which was renamed Vittoriosa after the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Birgu was where the Knights settled in Malta after they were kicked out of Rhodes by the Muslims in 1530. To protect themselves they turned the town into a fortified city to protect against further attacks from the Turks, which in the end turned out to be very beneficial. On entering the city we walked down towards the main square and on the right we visited the Inquisitors Palace. This building was originally the Law Courts of the Knights but after they moved to Valletta in 1571 it became the Inquisitors Palace, administering religious law for over 160 ... read more
