After one of the longest blogs that I have written yesterday, today is probably going to be one of the recent shortest. We took it very easy today and the most of the day had gone before we even knew it - not helped by how long it took me to write the blog from yesterday. I need to be careful that I don't spend so much time writing up one day that I don't get a chance to do anything during the next. My wife was happy as we were back in a hotel that served Earl Grey tea for breakfast. Later she went down to the pool. Given how hot we got yesterday, she had intended to go to an indoor pool, but strangely and rather annoyingly between us checking it out last night ... read more

Malta Blog Malta, what an island. I went into this place with very little expectations. But it managed to sway me massively and I now cannot wait to return there. Booking and Day 1 I booked this trip with my family as a last minute idea to surprise my grandparents on their 50th wedding anniversary and it was the best decision I have made. We made our way to Gatwick airport for a late afternoon flight with British Airways from Gatwick (LGW) to Malta Luqa (MLA). After a very uneventful flight down over France, Corsica and down the coast of Sicily for a nighttime approach in Malta International Airport. On the way in I witnessed the beauty of Malta at night and a number of fireworks from the south of the island. After collecting our bags ... read more

Wandered... Last day in Malta & sure to be a hot one. Trial packing for tomorrow & tying up a few loose ends. Afternoon spent walking over to Balluta and through the back streets to find our old friend still living in Il Karmnu. A quick chat & catchup. We headed off for a walk around the Marina in the shade. Seems a shame leaving... Observation that we did not see any beggars or Rommnies at all in Malta.... read more

We made it! After planes, trains, automobiles and our fair share of busses we made it! We got to Dulles by 7:15 (sweet!), found out we did indeed have TSA Precheck (sweeter!) and were through security and at the gate by 8:00 (sweetest!) Had dinner at an airport restaurant and then went and hung out by a charging pole to juice up our devices. There was a group of teenagers from an Arab country who were traveling back home (my guess is) and they had most of the charging stations plugged in. It looked like wire trees were everywhere. But we found a free station in the corner. I had gone to look for something at the airport and as I passed by the message board for our flight, it said, “This flight is overbooked. If ... read more

Sitting in my 3rdform Social Studies class at my college listen to my teacher ramble on about her favourite place in the world was not the highlight of my college education, but from then on Malta has always been in the back of my mind. Why we did a 3 week study on a tiny Mediterranean island, thousands of miles away from New Zealand was beyond my 12 year old brain. Seven years later though I find myself on this exact island, falling in love with it, just as much as my teacher had done all those years ago. Malta is an incredible place in the way that it has a very strong character but it also draws influence in from other countries and cultures. The language is a mix of what sounds like Italian and ... read more

In case you don't realize why I'm here, I'm here for a week-long management training program called 'Take Off!'. 12 of us from various EC centers were selected to come - EC Central, Malta, Boston, Toronto, New York, London, and USA (me!). Throughout the week we received training on various performance-related skills and were split into two teams to develop a project and present it to members of the board. Our team's project was to find a way to target EC's staff, students, agents, in communicating our 4 core values. I'm not a fan of more abstract tasks like this, but in the end our team one and it was a fairly well-thought-out proposal. It nonetheless caused major stress. The program itself consisted of interactive lectures on things like self-awareness, unlocking creativity, time management, etc. The ... read more

Back in March, Scott and I took at long weekend to Malta (I was between jobs at BP and Capgemini). We flew out on easyjet, not that pleasant, to Malta which is just off Italy in the med. We got some good weather for our 4 night stay in St Julian, a few bays around from the walled capital of Valletta. One of the days we did a hop-on-hop-off bus around the south eastern parts of the island of Malta. Valletta was really pretty especially the three cities across from the bay; beautiful old house and super yachts. After that we drove through vineyards to a quant fishing village; Marsaxlokk, the bay was fill of little fishing boats with big eye’s on them to protect the fisherman. Then we drove up the west coast visiting some ... read more

Ximena es compañerit... read more

The trip to Malta came about simply because I had entered a prize draw through a coffee promotion at work by punching in codes into a website, and entering myself into 5 draws for a pair of tickets to a European destination. Well, somebody up there likes me, because I scooped a pair of return tickets to Malta, and almost instantly, I was boarding a BA flight to Valletta, and arriving with the task of getting from the airport to the hotel armed with a basic map, and no other sense of direction. This proved to be the hardest task of the entire trip, really, despite how simple the map made it look, and once we'd arrived, after taking numerous diversions, and straying well off course, the resort of St. Julians looked lively enough to spend ... read more
