Good sleep, always when it rains..

We made a go of it & went into Valletta...bus from Leyland just around the corner. It was light rain but manageable. We had a great stroll down Archbishop Street. Lovely shops & usually there would be many diners on the pavement. The city is beautiful with it's huge limestone blocks on the super grand sized buildings. Influences are many including Sicilian, Arab, French, Greek, Phoenicians, Turkish, Nth African., Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Spanish, Knights of St John. We walked back up the hill via Merchant Street to the Battery Salute point. We could see quite clearly across the natural deep harbour to the 3 cities & all the shipping movement.
It's really nice to share travel experiences with Mary & John who share the same passion...& really nice to spend some more time together.

Prince Charles was in Valletta today for the 75years commemoration of the George Cross presented to all the people of Malta. Malta recieved more bombings in 1942 than London did in the entire blitz & the people did not surrender.

What a coindience we bumped into the couple from Aussie that we met in Palermo airport.

Every second person & every second thing is named 'Pwal' after St Paul the Apostle that was shipwrecked on the island.

Mdina was our next visit today by bus...we made a late dash for it while the weather had changed in our favour. A lovely walled city with a moat that was the original city of Malta. A working city with restaurants & homes. Limestone all around & underfoot. The view back over the countryside is spetacular.

We thought we better not leave it too late to head back as everyone will want to be on that last bus.....well don't get me started on their bus system.....or rather their traffic jams that create a big problem to their bus systems..

The island has a population of approx 450,000 & 405 Churches on both islands.
