Ranna hygiena, vyhodenie dalsej suciastky, opat roztrhane smradlave ponozky. Cesta opat super, najskor po dialnici, majitel hostelu vravel, ... read more

The history of Macedonia stretches back to ancient times, famous for the military exploits of Phillip II of Macedon and his world conquering son Alexander the Great. The modern day country arose from the collapse of the former Yugoslavia in 1991, with a population of only two million people including a significant Albanian minority. Officially recognised as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia due to Greek concerns over the use of the word Macedonia in Northern Greece, the Republic of Macedonia is striving to become part of NATO and join the EU. The Albanian minority has been granted a degree of autonomy after an uprising in the 1990's, with the country focussed on forging it's identity as an independent nation post Yugoslavia. Featuring beautiful scenery, rich in tradition and culture; the Republic of Macedonia is waiting ... read more

The Kale Fortress had loomed over us, since our arrival in Skopje. A visit to the Fortress was pencilled in for Sunday morning. It opened early – 0700 hours. We had what transpired to be our final breakfast at the hotel and climbed the hill from the Old Town. It was a surprisingly short walk and opened up a whole new world of drinking possibilities from those investigated to date. Who would have thought it? The First Microbrewery in Macedonia perched at the top of the hill. We made a note to return later. We walked across the grass beyond and up the hill to the main entrance. The Fortress is For Visitors proclaimed a very home-made looking sign. It actually said “Open” for Visitors, but that wasn’t immediately obvious. A mysterious large black Mercedes with ... read more

The music finally subsided in the early hours of the morning. However we were up bright and early and after an adequate breakfast, we made our way to the old Railway Station which now masquerades as the City Museum - free entry. The striking art deco building built between 1938 and 1940 is cut in half - left a relic to the 1963 earthquake. The simple clock on the front of the building remains halted - forever 0517 hours 1963. The museum houses a fascinating insight into the destruction of the city in old photographs and artefacts. I was surprised that foreigners had been killed - this was communist Yugoslavia, before it really fell out with Mother Russia and opened up to the west. There were photographs, showing Marshall Tito coming down to the southern reaches ... read more

Macedonia is prone to earthquakes. In fact, a mere 2 weeks before our departure for Skopje, a small quake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale hit the city. The epi-centre was only 2 miles from the city centre. Buildings shook. A bit of debris fell from buildings into the street, but no major injuries were reported. It was a different case in 1963. On 26th July, a large quake of 6.9 on the Richter scale destroyed large areas of the city. The death toll was over a 1000. There were many more injuries and most of the major buildings were left in ruins. The old Railway Station included. It was left in pieces. The clock on the front of the building has stood still ever since at the exact time of the quake - 5.17 am. ... read more

The sun slipped behind the mountains to the west. Across the lake, the lights of Albania would soon shine. It had been another warm, sunny day on the shores of Lake Ohrid. We stood on the pier in the town centre and admired the view. One of the large pleasure boats awaited the final passengers of their bus tour load, before setting sail. It was time for a pint. We mused that, despite the name, Ohrid was anything but! The Wizard chariot had landed early from Tour HQ at Luton Airport. It had been remarkably quiet in advance of our early afternoon take off time - a mere 3 minute wait to get through security. The Man in the Middle looked suitably impressed. There was no repeat of the oppressive Stansted search of the smalls and ... read more

We have parted ways with Intrepid. Our Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia expedition has finished. Officially today on paper, but really yesterday was the last day with a farewell dinner. Me and Bill have made our way through 3 countries and its not even midday – Albania, Slovenia and Germany. Early morning flight from Tirana saw us leaving in the wee hours of the morning, connecting a flight in Ljubljana to Frankfurt. We currently are on the ICE train to Nuremberg. So I need to recap the last country of our intrepid adventure – Macedonia!! We left Pristina early in the morning to catch a ‘rustic’ train over the border to Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. Apparently the train, which takes longer, is much more scenic and beautiful. Honestly, it was a rust bucket of a thing ... read more

I've often been able to gauge the general mood of a nation's people when travelling, just through observation. Here in Macedonia, it seems that they're not exactly super-happy with their lot. Though when reading about the wasteful urban regeneration programme in Skopje, you tend to understand why. Driving through rural Macedonia and through the outskirts of the bigger towns, it definitely appears to be a poorer country - more so than Albania for sure, although both countries have many an unfinished building lying around. And I don't know if its just the way they express themselves, but Macedonians always seem to be a bit annoyed with you when you're talking to them. It was also interesting seeing the amount of Albanian flags that were flying in Western Macedonia. Albanians and Macedonians haven't really got on with ... read more
