Sunny but cool.

After a fairly early breakfast, Paul and I hopped on a crowded train to Luxembourg City. The countryside was beautiful, but, unfortunately, the train does not follow the river. It cuts instead through the hills, giving one only Hegelian glimpses of the world.
We struck up a conversation with Robert, a computer science student from Stockholm. Though we originally separated when we reached our destination, we later re-encountered him and asked him to join us.

It turns out that Luxembourg celebrates a national holiday for my birthday. Well, not really. The Grand Duke is Jean and today was St. John's Day, the grand duke's name day, and thus an excuse to party.

The tourist office gave us a map and suggested we walk a certain route. First, up the main boulevard. Buildings, a couple of nice squares. Very high bridge with view into gardens below. Stunning. Watched end of guard change at ducal palace. Sat trying to figure out next step when very nice Luxembourg gentleman offered his assistance.

Spent next 30 minutes or so talking to this retired school teacher. Very interesting. He's quite proud of Luxembourg. Afterwards, he re-routed us and sent us to lunch. We decided to eat at an Italian restaurant. Excellent salad. Our teacher came in, and we asked him to join us. He declined, saying he liked to concentrate on food when eating. But joined us for coffee and bought us dessert.

We trundled off to the old fort. Impressive. Huge. Takes advantage of the natural cliffs. Brief tour of casements. Musty.

Beautiful walk along edge of cliffs. Lift to valley below. Nice stroll through gardens. Dramatic view looking up at bridges.

Just missed train to Cochem. Waited half-hour on platform. Changed at Tiere. Wandered town; stopped for coffee. Almost missed Cochen saying good-bye to Robert.

Could not decide where to eat. Back and forth, in circles. Eventually, at 22.00h, found excellent, inexpensive Italian food. Nice dinner.
