The Trip around France was a rapid 3800 kilometre epic, and while we saw more than we would if I had planned it - that may have been a few villages and many patisseries - we are grateful for Tim’s obsessive planning, and his ability to keep the Old People on track. He was very considerate of his mother, as I’m sure Andrew would be, because I usually like to just get going and am often a few metres ahead. I would like to believe that I am just checking that the way ahead is safe, but the reality is, I’m not very patient.
This morning was the first time that we have had some weighing scales available, and I’m pleased to report that we are both lighter than when we left Esch, 14 days ago. This astonishing news , after eating cheese, bread, and croissants, three things I try to go easy on back home, has inspired me to follow in the footsteps of every other self opinionated , eye for an opportunity type of entrepreneur, and create my own diet. It will be called the CBC Way To Healthy Living, and if you die trying, it will be
with a smile on your face. It will be more popular than the Paleo Diet, and I‘m expecting a call from Pete Evans any day now.
Today is a rest day, so I’m back on the tools.
A quick call to Andrew in Australia provided the advice that I needed to do some electrical work, including to charge $150 in the local currency, cash of course. So the light fitting replacement went safely, but no money yet.
Then there was the sticking front door that had caused the door handle to break, two problems for the price of one. We bought a Japanese and backsaw to slice a sliver from the bottom of the door without removing the door. The three hinges are bent due to the weight of the door, and the door dropped , causing it to jam. Both problems are now OK so I’m relaxing doing this.
Earlier today, Tim, Sue, and I walked into Esch, past some lovely old houses, beginning to be inundated with Autumn leaves. It’s remarkable how the weather has declined in the two weeks since we were gallivanting around France. We have come from the sunny villages and beaches
Esch Municipal Pool
Just a very cool building, and a decent pool complex from all accounts of Southern France, to 7 degrees and wet, slippery days. Tim said this can last for 7 months.
We passed some historic residences, a four story primary school, with a quiet safe quadrangle , and a fairytale mural painted on a large wall. It was built in 1911, and I didn’t take a picture but the mural is in the pics. Shortly after, we left Sue at the Nail Salon, and Tim and I had a coffee, checked out some art installations around the town, an Art Deco Church, had a coffee, and went back home to pick up the car. Apparently nails take a while to dry, so Sue needed a lift home. Life is tough.
Tomorrow we are driving to the Netherlands. I’ve never been there so it will be interesting; it’s all Dutch to me. I think there are 4 or 5 days involved here, including a stopover in Brussels to catch up with Ed, a mate of Tim’s . I’d like to pass on my warmest regards to him and only have one request. Don’t go out and buy a dishwasher !
I‘ve had feedback that the one in Geneva is going well,
so I’m very happy for Alex. We had a great stay there.
Well, that’s it for today. We have started watching a German Netflix series called Kleo. It’s more a comedy than a spy drama and I hope to watch a couple more episodes tonight.
