Early morning I wake up - around 5:30 - probably because of my less than pleasant sleeping position: as we put the tent up on a slight slope, my head is actually about 10cm lower than my feet, which didn't make for a great night's sleep. Then I realise: it's 6:30! Forgot about the time difference again, I really must change my clock forward. As Hans is up as well, we decide to just get up, pack away our stuff and flee the still mosquito-infested meadow. In the next town on the way, Eliskes, we stop to get some cake for breakfast which we then, along with the obligatory coffee, have for breakfast a little bit further down the road. The following 30km go by fast: a slight wind from the side, good road conditions, and ... read more

Catching taxis in Vilnius is not as easy as it sounds.... First of all, you can't hail them down: they will not stop to pick you up. Why? I don't know. Second, it costs more (perhaps even double) to catch a taxi before 8 or 9am and after 10pm....Maybe they just see the tourist dollars. I asked a local boy what the story was, and this is what he told me: " The best way to catch a taxi is to call for it. It is cheaper. If you get into a taxi in the street, they will charge you more. And they won't stop to pick you up" It doesn't make any sense. But there you are. You just need to stand next to a vacant taxi, call their number from your handy mobile, and ... read more

Another old town, and to be honest by now we’re a little old town fatigued. Sort of like travelling in Asia and grimacing at the thought of seeing another temple, or Tibet and visiting yet another monastery - we’re just hankering for something different. So to be honest we didn’t spend too much time lingering around here. Instead our Lithuanian hosts Danielius and Grazina took us out to the countryside for a taste of something a little different. We took a day trip out to nearby Kernave which is the site of manmade hillforts that date from the Bronze Age until the end of the 14th Century. The Kernave Hillforts are pretty mind boggling due to the fact that the hills were literally manmade. Large quantities of soil were reallocated to form hills; a place of ... read more

Eateries are a plenty in Vilnius. My favourite was a little tea house that i think was part of a chain of tea houses, but the atmosphere and the food were fantastic. And the prices were reasonable as well. I think it was called "Skonis ir kvapas" on Traku Street. We ate there twice because the place felt genuine, and though the menu was also written in English, as are a lot of menus in Vilnius, it didn't feel like it was catering to the tourist. Indeed, i think on both occasions we were the only foreigners there. The entrees were light; the choice wasn't big, but then again, the food was fresh. They had European cuisine; entre autre, they had russian cabbage pie, dumplings, and pasta as well as a variety of fish. Simon had ... read more

This is what everyone says when i tell them where i've been. Vilnius is kind of like Venice, except without the canals. Ok, and when i was there it wasn't sunny either. But with its churches and cobblestones it has an old world charm, that is romantic in itself. Simon and I were near the top floor of a hotel; he was attending Europython, and i was being tourist. I scoured the inflight magazines and the hotel magazine for addresses of small restaurants. Before we had left i'd looked into the tango scene: there was one, and i was determined that we would go dancing. After the sunny weather of Venice, the gloom of overcast and rainy skies in Vilnius was a little disappointing. Simon got me a beanie because my head was getting cold in ... read more

We have mentioned it before but we say it again. Emma likes beer but Ake doesn't. Consequently when we are in a restaurant Emma often orders beer but Ake orders juice. When the waiter or waitress arrives with our order they more often than not give Ake the beer and Emma gets the juice. If your aim is to save money here in Lithuania it is better to drink beer than to drink juice, because beer is cheaper. Well strictly juice isn't very expensive either. Heck, probably nothing is expensive here! ... read more

We had four days off from work and decided to go on a trip to one of the lesser known neighbouring countries to Sweden, namely Lithuania. Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic countries. Up until 1990 Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union. The formerly strong ties to Russia is something you can notice still today when you visit Lithuania. For instance the hotel we stayed in has furniture that looked like it came from a storage house in Novosibirsk, the supermarkets sell several different brands of Russian vodka but only rarely Western ones, in the restaurants you can buy Georgian (Georgia in Caucasus, not the US) mineral water but not Evian. Don't get me wrong. We absolutely love this. We both have a soft spot for Eastern Europe and the way things differ ... read more

Hello friends. We have been to Vilnius A couple of months ago dad took us to Tallinn in Estonia. We only stayed there for one day but we liked it very much. But now that we have seen a little bit of Tallinn we wanted to see more. But mum and dad refused to take us there again. They said that they have been there before and that there really isn't much more to see than the old town and we saw that when we were there with dad. We still tried our best to convince mum and dad to take us to Tallinn again but we soon realised that it was pointless. But we are not only cute little cuddly toys, we can be tricky too. We had a look at a map and ... read more

Unfortunately our stay in Vilnius wasn't long enough... We arrived from Riga on Monday afternoon after a long bus ride. We've decided to not plan our trip which meant that we hadn't booked a hostel before arriving in Vilnius - this caused a bit of frustration, but everything worked out in the end. Vilnius is a beautiful city. I loved the Old Town in Riga but I have to say that Vilnius' Old Town is even more gorgeous. Like the streets in Riga, the Old Town in Vilnius is made up of old cobblestone and I can't get enough of it! For you Europeans, you probably don't think cobblestone streets are that big of a deal, but when you come from a country as young as Canada, you really appreciate how much more charming a street ... read more
