From Vilnius to Riga I took a bus called Eurolines, this bus was a million times better than the last one, but a few dollars more. It was well worth it. On the bus I met a guy from the hostel I was staying at in Vilnius and he said he had to get out of that place it was so bad, so now I don't feel as bad for judging the place so quickly. When I arrived in Riga I went to my hostel Famous Franks, this place was so much fun but full of bachelor parties. I think there were 183 guys and 7 girls in this place. I really enjoyed the city, they have the largest market in Europe there. It is inside a building the Germans use to make blimps or aircraft ... read more

Riga, Latvia - January 28 through 31, 2010 We had but a short visit to Riga, but a winter-wonderland one. Bernard was attending a seminar in his field, International Humanitarian Law, and also delivered a short lecture. Since Bernard was busy with his seminar, I had loads of time to walk around this picturesque old city - our hotel was within walking distance of all ... read more

Saludes... Omar Velásquez Manzo...... read more

* ... read more

Sent: Fri 10/17/08 9:17 AM Vilnius, Lituania.

I had wanted to go to Latvia since I heard about the KGB Prison in Karosta long time ago, and it has the fusion architectural charms of old Russia, and the modern Scandinavia. Riga is a very small and beautiful city, and it was good value of money. Riga is also the city feeling more of that Soviet Republic than other Baltic cities. The flight from Istanbul to Riga took us less than 3 hours and we touched down just before the dark. Going through immigration, and officers complete with Soviet style uniforms, we entered the modernized airport lounge, and again given a little bit of difficult times of explaining the difference between PRC and HKSAR (Reason is PRC Passport holders do need a Visa and HKSAR do not) and they still could not tell the ... read more

One weekend in Riga We have two more small trips we would like to write about. Like the trips to Berlin and Milan they are too small to merit one entry each but together they are enough for us to write about. First we would like to write about our trip in Riga. In Riga we stayed at a youth hostel called Tiger Hostel. The name of the hostel is not as strange as you might think. You see the owner of the hostel is a tiger and there are tiger paintings on the walls and carpets with tigers on them on the floor and so on. It was a very nice hostel and the owner was a very nice fellow too. In a restaurant in Riga dad got all excited when he saw that they ... read more

In December 2001 I visited Grimsby on the East coast of England with my pops for a football match that will live long in the memory... for me and my Dad that is, the reason for this unmemorable event was that we both agreed that it was the coldest we had ever been in our lifetimes. Biting wind, driving rain and sleet, and two seats on row 1 with no roof above us all contributed to a shivery, dithering 2 hours at Blundell Park. Fast forward 8 years and myself and Rebecca booked flights to Riga in Latvia, I was convinced that my Grimsby experience may be beaten, in a "how cold can you get" kind of competition..... Latvia along with neighbours Estonia and Lithuania were accepted into the European Union in 2004, Riga in particular ... read more

A weekend in Riga A few months ago we went to Latvia. We haven't come around to publish a blog entry on that trip until now. But we figure it doesn't matter much if we are a bit late before we publish our travel tales and photos. We spent a total of three days there enjoying some nice spring weather while walking around in Riga old town and a few other places. The old town is a World Heritage and is the major tourist attraction in Riga. Many of Riga's visitors barely venture outside of the city centre and therefore don't see much else of what the city has to offer. This visit to Riga was very short and we were also stuck in the tourist trap of the historic city centre for most of the ... read more
