Nice morning for a 2.5 hour drive to Fiumicino where our hotel is located. The hotel is about 3K from the airport but fortunately we have not heard much air traffic over the hotel. The hotel has free underground parking where the car will likely remain until sometime tomorrow when I return it to the airport. On Thursday morning we will take the shuttle from the hotel to the airport because we have an early morning flight.

Today we visited Ostia Antica which is a Roman settlement dating back to about 200 AD. In fact this Roman settlement was the gateway to Rome which was settled after Ostia Antica. Over the years the flooding on the Tiber River resulted in the city being covered with mud and the actual port is now 4K away. The mud preserved some of the city. However much of the structures above the mud were stolen to be used in buildings as far away as Constantinople.

Tomorrow we will have a more leisurely day in Fiumicino before returning the car and repacking for the 18 hour flight home Arriving home will be somewhat of a shock because we have been enjoying day temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees and have only dealt with about 3 hours of rain with the exception of a couple of nights when it rained overnight but had cleared by morning.

The trip so far has been laden with a great deal of history, amazing architecture for the time, magnificent scenery, great food, crazy drivers and immersion into the Italian culture which has been an eye opening experience.

The buildings look a lot older and not taken care of that well. Needs some restoration.
