Arrival 0800 and another early tour start for us. This time Pompeii. What an amazing place. This wasn’t covered in Lava, but rather..Ash…13 meters of it. We had an excellent tour guide who knew his stuff. We walked around with him for a couple of hours as he showed us various points of interest. There was a red light district – complete with a ‘menu’ of services available painted on the wall. The guide had been doing this for 11 years and had only been in to the ‘sauna area’ 3 it was open. It is the only place that has the original roof. All the rest were destroyed. The paintings of the roof were just incredible. Phil had actually retained some information about Pompeii from his school days and told me before we arrived of a casting made of a dog and a man – that’s all he remembered. Sure enough there they were – castings of a dog, man and child that were found in the ruins and the space that was left in the ash was filled with product that resulted in these castings. Phil was told that he was a ‘lucky man’ by one of the stall holders outside the ruins…a fact that I shall continue to remind him of in future!

Back at the ship in time for a 1300 departure- this time no passengers left behind. Captain must have been pleased/relieved.
