Theater
Cannes, France I know it’s been quite some time since I’ve updated this here blog, but I’ve been quite busy with work and entries all about work are pretty boring to write and read.
Now that that’s out of the way, A few weeks ago I decided I was going to go ashore in the ports that I hadn’t yet because of scheduling. These mostly ended up being tender ports. Cannes was first up, It was pretty much just as I expected: Pretentious and French. There were lots of high end shops that neither I nor the 2nd officer I went ashore with could comprehend spending money at. The one thing that we did see lots of were movie theaters, made me feel like I was in Entourage (when they go to the film festival in Cannes).
Conveniently my work schedule allowed me to go ashore a couple times when we had late departures. So I went ashore a couple days in a row with my roomie. Malaga during the day was significantly different then it was when we overnighted there nearly 4 months ago. But the coolest place I’ve been lately was Monaco/Monte Carlo.
Just a 20 minute train
Casino
Monte Carlo, France ride from the ship takes you into the center of Monaco, and although it’s quite (or should I say very?) expensive I think that taking the train there for only a day is the way to do it. Immediately after getting off the train you realize that this is the playground for the super rich of Europe. While walking to the start/finish line of the Monaco Gran Prix we spotted a few Bentleys and a Rolls Royce Phantom. Took a walk around the marina to spot a few super yachts, had our minds blown and decided to take a walk up to the casino. See photo for what we spotted here. Other than being a super expensive and luxurious place, Monte Carlo was a fantastic place to spend an afternoon.
The last place I had really wanted to go to was the Vatican. I had a few freaked out moments trying to get ashore as I was on mobile fire duty and the people I normally get to cover were all headed ashore as well. Not to mention the trains were on strike until just a few hours prior to us disembarking, and had threatened to go back on
strike at any time. But alas we made it to the Vatican. I’m so glad I went, My last time in Rome I saw pretty much everything I had wanted to see minus the Vatican. So this was the opposite, St Peters Basilica was insane. The best looking church from the inside I have been in. Period. The history is mindboggling, and seeing things from Angles and Demons was awesome!
We carried on to the Vatican Museum which leads you up to the Sistine Chapel. It’s full of all the art that the church had commissioned over the years, except that the male statues had their penis’ missing. (Google this if you don’t already know about it) For some reason they don’t let you take photos in the Chapel itself, so uhh… that photo isn’t mine… :P
With that, I’m going to call this my last entry while I’m away. I get home in 10 days ish. When home I should be updating my real website with 200 or so of the best photos from this trip, so I’ll post an update then with the web address. Comments and emails at gbeier@gmail.com always appreciated.
Party on Wayne.
