You won’t run out of things to do and see during your stay in Bergamo, Italy
. There are many wonderful historic and culturally relevant attractions within the city, and you’ll also want to set aside a substantial amount of time for day trips.
My advice is to rent a car while in Bergamo
for the best possible freedom and flexibility during your stay. It’s a beautiful part of Italy to drive, with rich verdant hills, stunning alpine views, and easy-to-navigate streets.
Let’s go over some of the most memorable spots you’ll want to visit during your stay in Northern Italy:
Bergamo Venetian Walls
The Bergamo Venetian Walls
are the substantial remnants of the huge defensive walls that once encircled the old upper city. The walls were constructed during the 15th
centuries. You’ll discover that you can walk along parts of the walls, and that they typically have an interesting design with pointed towers at certain intervals. Make sure to see the stretch of wall that is located to the east of the Porta San Giacomo. Adorned with a line of trees at the bottom, you’ll be enchanted by this landmark.
The Piazza Matteotti
is a gigantic square that includes an immense amount of open space. It features a number of impressive buildings, such as the Chiostro di Santa Maria, the Teatro Gaetano Donizetti, and the Torre dei Caduti. There are also two well-known monuments: the Monumento Al Partigiano and the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II. You’ll enjoy the shade of numerous trees as you spend time in the square. Also set aside time to visit the restaurants, shops, and cafes you’ll find.
The Piazza Vecchia
is another Bergamo square that is well worth visiting. You’ll see that there are many beautiful structures surrounding the square. Some of these include the Palazzo della Ragione, the Campanone Torre Civica, and a beautiful decorative fountain. Many visitors to Bergamo like using the Piazza Vecchia as a starting point for their explorations of the city.
Basilica of St. Mary Major
You’ll discover the Basilica of St. Mary Major
through a small decorative archway to the south of the Piazza Vecchia. The basilica was built between the 12th
centuries. When you visit this famous structure, you’ll notice that the church’s front façade features a great deal of decoration. There is also an intricate 3D cute design above a large central window. Enjoy also viewing the building’s decorative porches with marble arches, as well as the statues of several Italian saints. When you go inside the basilica, you’re sure to be impressed by the wonderful decoration, including vibrant frescos.
Hop in your rental car and set off on a day trip to Milan
! You’ll regret missing out on seeing this famous and fashionable city during your time in Italy. Milan offers a wide variety of historic buildings, and it has a lively nightlife, a dizzying array of cultural attractions, and lots of shopping opportunities. Remember to explore the grounds of Sforza Castle and see the gorgeous Botanical Gardens.
You’ll have a Vacation to Remember in Bergamo!
With all of these things to do, you’re sure to have a spectacular time in Bergamo and the surrounding area.
