After leaving Venice we were flying out of Bologna to take advantage of some cheap flights (did we pay for that - but more of that later). On the way we decided to stop for a night at Verona, whose main claim to fame is as the setting for Romeo and Juliet. It was a two hour train trip to Verona and we arrived just after 2pm. From the train station we made our way towards town stopping at a hotel about 400 metres from the station. After dumping our gear we headed out to explore and were very surprised to find a very pretty and clean city. There are several sites worth seeing including the old Roman Arena, which is still used today for concerts and other things, and Castlevecchio, an old castle that sits ... read more

We spent our second day in Venice not actually in Venice...we took a day trip to Verona. I don't know how I managed to do it but I talked Matt into seeing an opera! There's a beautiful Roman amphitheatre there built around 30 AD and is now used for opera performances...the Arena di Verona. It's the third largest amphitheatre in existance. They have an opera festival every summer and Saturday, September 1st was the last night of the festival. They were performing "Aida" which, beyond it being an opera, I knew nothing about, but I talked Matt into it. Tickets were about $30 a person for the nosebleed seats and you're giving a seat on the stone steps of the amphitheatre, so we got blow-up seat cushions to protect our tushes from the hard cold marble ... read more

The searing heat finally let up yesterday and as we sat late in the afternoon in the center of town watching a thunderstorm roll over the Dolomites, we smiled at the good fortune that was blowing in. The next day we'd travel to Verona. Wake at 7 A.M. by a man and his gas-powered weed-wacker in the large empty field outside the window. Try to sleep in 'til 7:45 when the alarm will go off. Starting to feel like we should never leave the house, shutter it all up and keep to ourselves. But we're adults, we don't need that much sleep. Make it to the train station by 9:05 for the nine-forty-something to Venezia-Mestre and catch another train to Verona. Make it to Verona by noon and ride the #11 bus into town. See the ... read more

so i consider myself fairly athletic, kind of fit, decent balance...not so much a bike rider though, i don't think i've ridden for maybe 10 years. but hey, there's free bikes in verona! marc practicaly learned to ride before he learned to walk and he's been itching to ride the entire trip. so i get on the bike, yeah, my balance is real shaky, throw in traffic and an unfamiliar city...there's a high likelihood of something disastrous happening. and don't foget about the packs...so marc puts on his pack, then my pack in front and navigates us through the city peeking over my pack. it has to be a bit comical seeing me riding with nothing and then marc ladden down with two huge packs, and yet he still rides in a straighter line than me. ... read more

On the 25th May we headed for Florence. Florence was beautiful on our first day, then the weather turned bad and unfortunately we got stuck in the rain at a muddy campsite. We did however venture out to Pisa to check out the Leaning Tower, which Tezz thought would be bigger! Anyway back to Florence where I stared at the buttocks on the fake statue of David (Gab you would have loved it), and shopped for leasthergoods before we got hailed on...that was Florence. Off to Bologna where we spent another rainy night, and had a brief look at the Fotana Del Nuttuno in the Main Square. The memories from my last trip are constantly flooding back to me! Venice rocked. We camped right next to the airport... ahh the serenity. The campsite was really ... read more

So I finally decided to pack my bags and head over to the continent and do something different for my birthday. I visited a friend who lives in Verona, Italy. As you may know, I love all things Italian, art.....history.....culture.........FOOD......and it has always been a dream to one day end up living there. Did it live up to my expectations??? Absolutely and much more! Although there is so much more of the country to see. Getting off the plane and walking on the tarmac to get into the airport started the staring from men! You hear all the stories but it's quite funny when it actually happens. Upon arrving, my friend picked me up and took me straight into downtown Verona. WOW!!! It is so old and beautiful. So much history......which I love! The people ... read more

Verona, home to the bard's timeless tale Romeo and Juliet, and a city that has certainly prospered as a result of this claim to fame. There is some debate in the travel guides as to authenticity of the city's claim to house the true sites of Juliet's house and her tomb (major tourist attractions in Verona) but Adam and I chose to go along with it in any case...Much more fun to be swept up and romanced by the myth. Our arrival in Verona was anything but romantic however. More tales from two hapless travellers where it took us 2 hours to locate our hotel due to our reliance upon a dodgy map, vague directions from the tourist office (whoever thought 1km could be so far?) and grunted responses from bus drivers who really couldn't have ... read more

OK, so it looks like I really stink about updating my blog. Sorry. :( But since I've last blogged I went to Verona, Padua, and Venice! So I'll write about my adventrues there, starting now! So the school took us to Verona on Friday, November 10. Once again, we left the train station in Rome really early and everyone seemed to be annoyed by my unusual perkiness. Oh well! I can't help it--I get excited. We got there about noon. We ate lunch at a little cafeteria-style restaurant there, and it was pretty good. We all were ready to go to Castevecchio, but when we arrived there, it was closed down for a senator's meeting. Go figure. So with 23 anxious students, Emilio improvised with a trip to the Mantegna art exhibit there. It wasn't bad, ... read more

I made a day trip to Verona to see the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Once again I encountered delays on the train. I haven't had much luck here but as always, the destination proved to be worth the journey. Verona is very much Roman in architecture but also has its pink medieval buildings which I thought was pleasant visually. I saw most of the main sights from Piazza Bra (don't ask why the piazza is called this. As far as I could see , it has nothing to do with lingerie). The roman Arena, an amphitheater was also impressive as well as Castelvecchio and Palazzo delgi Scaligeri. Nothing too eventful happened today. However my camera is dunzo....hopefully it's a temporary problem. ... read more

Quick Notes: 1. "Red Light Stupido"! Driving here is scary and we're only in Northern Italy. They say it gets worse the farther south you go. I'm thinking of leaving the car in a garage and taking the trains. 2. Life lesson - if you buy something for $7,000 and sell it a few weeks later for $250,000, something is probably wrong. (See below). 3. Italian men are like peacocks. They wear flashy colors, bright red shoes, and love to strut. ITALY! we love the pizza and the pasta and are getting fatter by the minute! We pulled into Verona in the late afternoon and went into town on the bus for dinner. the bus managed to foil us twice--both on the way there and on the way back. those tricky italians! we found a wine ... read more
