A few months back Ryanair graced us with yet another sale on their alredy bargain tickets. How could we resist a £20 return flight (taxes included) to somewhere in Europe - so Venice it was. What started with just 3 of us soon ended with 7 of us going. We booked our lovely apartment on the canals and we were set for Pizza, Wine, Pasta, Canals and Gondola rides.
Before we even left London we were down to 6 people. The morning we were due to leave, Nese was fortunate enough for a family member (of the family she works for as she is a nanny) to have a heart attack and she had to run to the rescue of the non-english speaking Grandma who was in an English hospital while her bosses (Neses') were in Hong Kong on business. Rich people I tell ya!!! So after lots of begging and pleading for her bosses to return as soon as possible, Nese had to miss out on glorious Venice.
We flew over the Italian alps on our approach to Venice airport. Already covered in snow we all got very excited for 2 reasons - it looked absolutely amazing and
second, we are all going to the snow for Christmas and if there is snow now, there is bound to be snow in 5 weeks time!!!
We arrived at the airport and Wendy and I (Kerrie) sorted out tickets for the bus and then we headed onto the island of Venice. We then hopped onto a Water Bus and cruised the Grand Canal to where we were staying. It was a great introduction to Venice, even if it was feckin' freezing. We were all greeted at our bus stop and taken to our own apartment. this was just off the grand canal and we had our own little canal to watch over through our bedroom windows. All starving we headed our straight away to taste the delights of the Italian cuisine - first Pizza and then Pasta!! Venice is not really a party place so we raided the supermarket for cheap grog and headed back to the apartment for a quiet night on the Jagermeister (obviously not going to be a quiet night!)
The next morning we were up nice and early - 10am. After Wendy had cleaned up s**w from the night before we headed out for
a day of dawdling. The weather was a bit of a shock to the system. Although the sun was out and there was not a cloud in sight, it was about 10 degrees in the day. We cruised around and ate more food, something we did pretty much all the time, and found our way onto a Gondola and floating through the small canals of Venice. Our guide, George Clonney as he called himself, couldnt speak a whole lot of English and loved to tell us about how much the city floods when it rains! After our Gondola ride we headed to St Marks Square to dodge some Pigeon S**t! The whole square is covered in pigeons and you can feed them and let them sit all over you. No thanks. Damo thought it would be a laugh to throw the food over us all so the pigeons would fly on us and Dave stayed well clear as a he quite a phobia of bird poo. The rest of our day was spent cruising around before returning to the apartment for a nanna nap. This is something that we all have become quite accustomed to while travelling! That evening was
then spent eating more pasta and pizza and drinking wine and sitting in some weird pubs.
On our final day we headed to the Rialto Bridge to take in the sights around this area before hopping onto a boat and heading out to some of the other islands further nort. On the first island we were treated to a glass blowing demonstration and shown through the showroom of glass looking at shot glasses that cost 300 euro for a set of 6, I dont think so. We then went to a second island that was so damn cold we just about froze and tried to keep moving to avoid freezing to death. finally we headed to a small fishing island known as Burano. All of the houses are painted bright different colours and all the shops are full of really yummy biscuits! It was now dark and we headed back onto the nice warm boat back to Venice. Our last night was a quiet one inside eating the biggests pizza's we have ever seen as it was to cold to walk around outside and we had a whole lot of alcohol to get through.
The next day we
Gondola
How romantic!! hung around the apartment and ate left over pizza before heading to the airport, and back to freezing cold London.
