Venice
The port area is very dirty Venizia is the local name, apparently in the days before writing there were locals had different names to what foreign travellers used.
Thursday
Travelled to Venice, we had 2 days there,
Had dinner and a night tour of the city.
Spent the whole of the next day there just looking around and some shopping.
Venice is a group of about 180 little islands just off the mainland, the waterways are just the gaps between the islands, of course they have built right up to the edge and the canals are pretty narrow. Each island is a separate community with its own governing power and its own church, hence there are a lot of churches here.
The area on the mainland is an industrial area like Kwinana, its very strange you go through this shitty industrial and port area with fuel tanks and smoke stacks everywhere and then cross by boat to a world heritage area.
About 56000 people live here, but its about half what it was 20 years ago, the real estate has gotten so expensive that its too expensive to buy here so the young people buy on the mainland which is still called Venice.
Our hotel was about 45 minutes drive from Venice, it was a Holiday Inn and it was real luxury, the standard seems to be getting better and better.
